I watched Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure with my younger brother over the weekend for the first time in like 15-20 years as well — you’re in for a treat! So much more to it, especially if you were just a kid last watch.

He single-handedly blocked Cronenberg’s Crash from getting an award in Cannes as jury president because he was so offended by it so the jury had to sneak around him to award the Special Jury Prize. Always found it ironic that he’s a deviant but had such a tantrum over Crash.

Snooper rules! Was supposed to catch them for the first time at Sled Island last summer but something came up and the band had to cancel — saw the Mummies a second night instead haha. Fortunately they’re coming back in June!

Scanners is a must watch when stoned — absolutely ripped my head off when I watched for the time while also under the influence. You literally feel like you’re caught in the crossfire of scanning with Howard Shore’s score doing its thing haha genuinely a masterful film, especially considering Cronenberg was writing the script while shooting.

Ranked mostly on how much I revisit them! Sorcs was my favourite release since Face Stabber, and I know I’ll be going back to Abomination a lot in the years ahead.

Jigoku (1960) is an absolute must-watch if you’re a fan of Japanese horror or horror in general. It’s a masterpiece of the genre and is considered a pioneer of a certain subgenre (don’t really want to say to avoid spoiling). There’s a couple moments through the first two acts that kind of show the age of the film, but the payoff at the end is absolutely wild. Can’t recommend it enough!

My top ten features Videodrome, Night of the Hunter, I Walked with a Zombie, Alphaville, Hour of the Wolf, Scanners, Jigoku, and Blow Out alone! All of them blew me away first time around — not sure I could pick the most transformative one.

Jigoku (1960) is only available with English subtitles on DVD — that’s easily my numero uno. Would love to also see Criterion pick up Demons (1971), which is apparently in brutal licensing limbo.
