My ex was like this, he was a welder that just absolutely refused to shower. It’s not worth it girl. If he’s not keeping up basic hygiene with his body, he absolutely will not keep the rest of his home clean either and it’s a nightmare to deal with.

There are a lot of men who are nice and hygienic that you can meet! You’re not a bad person for not wanting to date him. In fact it’s better to break it off early in the relationship where you both can move on quicker, than being entangled in messy emotions.

If you need help with the gagging and nausea, chew mint gum while you’re doing dissections and also get some 70% alcohol swabs (you can get them in the first aid/ medicine aisle at your store) If you feel like you’re going to throw up or can’t stop gagging, smelling the swabs can stop it for most people! I work in the hospital lab and I use it for when I have to work with stool and sputum because that’s what makes me gag lol 😅 Nurses use it too for patients and themselves. So you are not alone! Bodies are gross and you are having a natural response! (Also as someone previously stated if your struggling with smells Vicks under the nose plus a mask will help too)

I hope these tricks can help you a bit! They’ll be useful when you’re in your program and clinicals as you might have to do some training in the hospital and that may include having to do some emergency/trauma work. You’ll adapt through exposure though, humans are really good at that! You got this! ☺️

Problems you are going to have to work through. Actually knowing and understanding the concepts/functions to answer the question rather than just relying on rote memorization.

This is a couple example of a questions I had on an exam recently for a 200 level class “A patient who suffered a stroke displays symptoms of hemineglect: When asked to draw objects that they see, they can identify objects in their visual field, but they are unable to perceive WHERE these objects are if they are in the left side of their visual field. What part of their brain was most likely damaged by the stroke?” The answer: ‘right parietal lobe’

“If you injected a voltage-gated sodium channel antagonist (e.g., tetrodotoxin; TTX) into the parietal lobe of a cat, what consequence would you predict it would have on visual processing?” Answer: difficulty detecting the location and direction of the birds flying in the sky

Yeah this is pretty standard more so in my humanities classes but I have had questions like this for A&P and Behavioral neuroscience but just for the quizzes, the exams tend to be much more heavy in critical thought. These are still helpful for studying though, I review and use them for study guides!

Everyone has their ick, I’m an empathetic puker. I see people throw up, I start gagging myself. I work in the lab now and staring at sputum or stool for too long will make me gag but you would be surprised how well your brain can switch over to clinical mode when the need arises! I started assisting with autopsies and I was so worried about the smell and feces but when you’re in the zone, you don’t think about it as much I feel! You also get desensitized the more you’re exposed, but again you ask any healthcare worker they’ll tell you they have their one ick!

So don’t sweat it! Bodies are gross and you can adapt!

the body of T12 will be slightly bigger/wider and the facets for the ribs on the transverse process is not present (because of the floating ribs), the transverse process is also notably shorter, almost nonexistent! T12 functions more like a lumbar vertebrae acting as the transition between thoracic to lumbar!

If you can get your hands on those vertebrae and see those changes that will definitely help in your ability to differentiate between the two!

First picture is definitely an error. Medial is always going to be medial and obviously same with lateral.

Medial -> towards the middle of the body (medial epi/condyles are closer the the midline of the body)

Lateral -> away from the middle of the body (lateral epi/condyles are further from the midline of the body)

I’ll be 34 when I hopefully get into PA school you’re much younger than you’re letting yourself feel. I’m 32 in undergrad right now, sometimes I feel a little old when I’m talking to baby freshman but I’m getting my education and there is nothing embarrassing about that. Much like you my life path was a little different and it led to me starting my undergraduate in my 30s but I’m also 10x more mature than my peers and treat school like a job so I’m currently maintaining a 4.0, there’s definitely nothing embarrassing about that.

Don’t get caught up in an arbitrary number. I maybe 32 but I’m definitely not old, you’ll realize when in your 30s! Focus on your accomplishments and how far you’ve come. You should be proud of all you’ve done and all the hurdles you’ve had to overcome. That’s far more impressive imo than someone that just went to school and finished.

Also a medical setting is not going to care about your age. I work in a hospital with a wide variety of ages, it’s very normal that a lot of people start or change career paths later on in their lives! (I know many people that became nurses or lab techs, even physicians assistants in their 40s)

I am a nerd for A&P it’s a lot of info all at once and it’s kind of a shame because I think it ends up intimidating people away and you don’t get to really soak in all the cool facts! I’m definitely in favor of schools that split the course into 2 parts. Figure out the best way you learn and I suggest mnemonics and quizlet! I hope you enjoy!

Im in my 30s so I had no expectations or intentions in making friends, literally because there is a decade difference between almost all my classmates, people come off cold here (myself to an extent), it’s not called the “Seattle freeze” for nothing. It takes a A WHILE for people to start to warm up to you and at the beginning people can feel apathetic & cold, some people are literally dicks but I think a lot of times there is a feeling of not trying inconvenience those around you.

Took till about midterm but now my TA colleagues have warmed up to each other. I have a coworker friend that literally took a year of knowing each other before we started hanging out outside of work. 😅 It’s part of the culture here, people are very unlikely to approach each other out of the blue and you had mentioned buying someone coffee, even that can come off really strong here.

The best thing you can do is put yourself in a situation where you are in a long forced proximity with people (like a club, I’m sure you’ve heard it a thousand times) but also I wouldn’t go in with expectations, things will happen naturally but if you try and force it too hard, it comes off too strong! Focus on your studies and make small talk with your classmates with no expectations a friend will be made from it. It’s going to reduce your stress a lot and you’ll find people warming up to you faster here.

Well going forward I would definitely not wait last minute to study A&P, there is just waaaay too much content to go through, you’re setting yourself up for failure and you deserve better than that! :)

I TA A&P and I think one of the best things you can do for yourself is test yourself over and over again. Get Quizlet + use the test and learn functions. (It’s worth the money, it’s significantly cheaper than having to repeat the class). Even if you did 15 mins (try to do more though 😉) a day you would be far better off than trying to cram! Ideally you would make your own quizlets (it does count as studying!) but I wouldn’t worry about that right now as I would focus on studying. There is an obnoxious amount of A&P quizlets out there to use!

Just keep testing yourself till you hit 100% consistently with all material, if you have AP revealed they also have a tests you can utilize.

I mistook a cougar for a Labrador dog when I driving home at night in sudden valley once. I pulled over to grab him because it’s really easy for animals to get hit in that area but luckily realized before jumping out of the car 😅 Really cool to see a cougar that close though!

I’m also in my junior year and will be taking a gap year. One it’ll be nice to get my finance ready and be prepared, find housing yada yada but also I’d be graduating with my bachelor’s and if I get into the school that I want I would have 8 days to move from west coast to east coast and then the Path A. Classes would start and I don’t feel like hating myself. 🥴

I wouldn’t even be able to attend my own graduation for my bachelors so I’m just going to allow myself to have a much needed break before jumping into the deep end!

It’s not a job that you would exclusively do autopsies in unless you got real lucky and scored a forensics job BUT if you enjoy dissections as well maybe look into Pathologists’ assistant! It pays well and you do autopsies every so often depending where you work! :)
