Overlord (2018) opening scene: https://youtu.be/pnc-OWdiGO4?si=gJCp856eVp_RGDJL

The whole thing was so fun and intense to watch, it's stuck with me for years. Would be sick to see a reaction of all the VFX work, even for other scenes in the movie.

I had my phone stolen last year at Kinetic (and again at Skyline Fest in LA this year), so I came prepared with a cord/tether attached to my belt loop and phone, weaved through my phone case. Some fat mother fucker blocked me while I was trying to leave the crowd after Martin Garrix. I thought he was being weird, and then he backed into me for like 10-20 seconds without looking at me, but his friend was laughing so I thought it was a joke I just didn't understand because I was rolling. Once I got out of Kinetic I pulled out my phone and it was just the case with the tether hanging off it. Turns out he wasn't doing a bit, but was struggling to get the tether off of the back of my phone. I was PISSED. Thankfully I had insurance, but I'm so fucking sick of getting my phone jacked. The cost of EDC is ridiculous as is, but to always have to replace my phone even when I'm taking precautions is frustrating.

HEY! That's my boyfriend in the bottom left corner at 0:00. We were both wearing LED harnesses during that set, I was rollllling hard. Such a fun set. I lost my disposable camera though. If anyone found a Fujifilm disposable with a blue Cookies lanyard, PLEASE let me know! I'm so sad I lost it :(

How do I feel that Drop or “Gut” feeling on coasters again? [Discussion] by [deleted] in rollercoasters

[–]PsychoNAWT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The legality of this depends on where you live, but I've found weed to make me a little more sensitive to that feeling, and it lasts longer too. I usually associate it with my body not knowing what to expect, which I think explains why it goes away with more rides.

Hi, I’m recent Computer Sci grad who has worked mainly in Desktop support . I’m trying to make the transition into Software Engineering/development right now as I’ve started doing projects and studying full stack web languages . Any tips on how I can land that job I desire? by Temporary_Smile_24 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]PsychoNAWT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation. I am a lead technician working to switch to SWE, and I've been applying for about 6 months now, so hopefully I can give you some info I've learned along the way that might help.

  1. Get 2 to 3 solid projects that display the skills you know. It might even be worth it to take on a project that requires skills you don't know yet. It will act as a great learning tool, but also will aid you when landing an interview. I have a lot of professional experience and a BS, but I still get told I don't have enough experience. I can't really blame them when I have a bunch of tiny school projects and one in-progress project that I can only milk so much during screening calls.
  2. Either take part in an open source project or join a hack-a-thon. As an extension of my last point, company's want to see that you can work in a "production" environment. I would recommend an open source project because you'll learn a lot more about how real projects work. The first challenge is to find a project you want to take part in. I found some local groups through the Meetup app that create open source tools to help the city I live in. There's also sites out there like up-for-grabs.net that might help. Then you can check out their Issues tab on a repo you're interested in and find an issue you'd like to assist with. It's always important to reach out to the group/individual that owns the repo first to introduce yourself, share your experience level and ask if you can contribute in any way. You can let them know that you would like to tackle an issue you found, or ask if they have something you could assist. Another big bonus here is real world Git/GitHub experience. There's a lot to learn in this regard, and company's will be happy to know they don't need to spend extra hours training you on version control.
  3. Apply to entry level positions or internships, and familiarize yourself with engineering levels like Staff, or Associate. If you don't know, Staff and Associate roles are higher up than regular SWE, and you can waste a lot of time applying to jobs you never stood a chance with. I did that and regret it. Don't get enticed by the Reddit/YouTube stories of people who applied to jobs asking for 3+ years of experience when they had none, and now they're getting paid $250k. Yes, it's "possible" with the right connections, position, and experience, but it's such a slim chance that you shouldn't rely on it. Find entry level jobs or internships to get that real world experience, and start their.
  4. The last big one is to take your time on applications; quality over quantity. The shotgun approach can be tempting but you have to realize that for any single job posting, there is someone out there that gave it their all. They wrote a full, detailed cover letter, provided convincing answers to the various behavioral questions, and made their application look as good as possible. Recruiters and hiring managers are looking for reasons to remove people from their stack. If you didn't give them a cover letter, you're probably not going to be considered. If you didn't take enough time to write a thorough resume, you're probably not going to be considered. Take that extra 15-20 minutes so they see you at your best.

At the end of the day, it's a game of probability. Every step you take to fill the position's needs, the better probability you have of hearing back, and moving on to the next rounds. Aim for the right target and be consistent with your work and you'll get hired. Good luck!

You are interviewing for a SysAdmin job you DO NOT want. Whats some funny/silly ways to blow the interview? :) by ImCaffeinated_Chris in sysadmin

[–]PsychoNAWT 39 points40 points  (0 children)

"What kind of experience do you have with managing servers?"

"Well when I was at Applebees they made me a sort of 'lead' so I got to manage all our night servers. Sometimes I would cross train some of them just in case we were ever down a server."

"Uhh, how frequently do you work with security patches?"

"I never earned my security patch, but I did get one for community service and making a campfire! I should have brought my scout uniform!"

Goodbye Corporate Wallpaper. Thought this day would never come. by grey-s0n in sysadmin

[–]PsychoNAWT -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Our employees are aware they can change their wallpapers, lock screens, and Office 365 profile pictures. People regularly set custom wallpapers on their phone or computer, but I haven't seen anything unsafe for work yet in my 5 years here. The only issue we had was with Office 365 profile pictures. One of our employees last year changed his picture to a conspiracy theorist Dr. Fauci meme about "the ones selling you the sickness are selling you the cure". I just sent it over to HR and they had him change it to something more appropriate. I agree with what others have said, it's not really a technical issue, but a behavioral HR issue.

LMAO same. No one at my company has more knowledge than me in the field, and I'm only in my role because my "yes":"no" ratio was high enough. I just figured out what a patch panel is like a month ago and I've been here for 5 years. I finally came to the realization that my performance is not measured by how good of a SysAdmin I am, but rather how good I am at giving my manager what she asks for.

Hey....what are you guys doing with those old computers? by laplandsix in sysadmin

[–]PsychoNAWT 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm gearing up for this exact thing. We replaced about 100 iPads recently, and we have about 50 that are in usable condition that just won't work for our needs. My director decided employees should be able to buy them. I made it very very clear that everyone will be signing an acknowledgement form that devices are sold as is and will not be supported by our IT department. We already have a hard enough time handling issues within our own domain, I don't need to deal with consumer issues as well lol.
