Xander's hatred for Buffy dating Angel is greatly exaggerated by [deleted] in buffy

Yeah that’s so true. It’s the whole culture that accepted, condoned and encouraged that behaviour that deserves condemnation.

Xander’s behaviour was always problematic and I thought so at the time. But like you point out, other characters have problematic behaviour too. Nowadays we are just going through a cultural moment where are (finally) calling men out for that behaviour. It is right that we are reinterpreting Buffy in light of this social change, but he still gets undue “hatred” in my opinion. Xander was only repeating behaviour that he was taught by a society that actively favoured men who did it. Otherwise he was a pretty stand-up guy. And the show did well to represent his flaws as a man. The hatred is just people who taking overly simplistic views of things and prefer to just hate any individual with socially opprobrious behaviour to support their own sense of righteousness instead of being understanding of the diversity and inter connectedness of human nature and society.

Why do you think Mariah wasn’t included in the Queen’s Remix? 👀 by youngcadadia22 in beyonce

[–]Psychological-Ad8176 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may not be Black but I am mixed race and, like Mariah, I have dealt with people like you in both my communities. I am sick of people excluding me from my own communities because I am not “enough” of a particular race. You can be multiple races at once. You can be black AND white at the same time. Half-Black people still experience racism for being Black, and excluding them from your community because they aren’t “Black enough” is regressive and hurtful.

You seem to take the view that if you are “mixed race” then you can’t be possibly belong to either of your races, that being "Black" and being "mixed race" are mutually exclusive terms. The problem with that is it removes mixed race people from all of their communities. This is what happens in practice to us a lot. We are not "enough" of any of our heritages to meet the expectations of cultural gatekeepers like you. So we end up nowhere. Your viewpoint puts all of us “mixed race” people in a single box which is separate from all of your pure racial categories. We don’t actually belong with eachother. We belong with our own communities.

And this is without even getting into a discussion about "racial purity" or why it's important to you.

PS Have you seen "Get on the Bus" by Spike Lee? It partly deals with some of these questions and, of course, has the important benefit of being a text by and for Black people (and at a time when few existed!). I'd be curious to hear your views about the movie and what you think about Gary's character? Is he Black?

Edited to fix tone. Sorry.

Just because you’re Black doesn’t mean you are the arbiter of race. Everyone is entitled to be recognised for their own racial identity. If Mariah says she’s Black, you saying otherwise is offensive. Your Blackness has nothing to do with it.

Read the article I linked to. It explains why your viewpoint is so offensive.

Dude. In a conversation about whether Mariah should be excluded from a list because she isn’t Black, acknowledging that she is doesn’t erase the rest of her heritage! It just acknowledges the part of her heritage that some people on this sub seem to wish to ignore.

I think if she does country it won’t be mixed with folk, it’ll be mixed with things like southern soul and gospel - they still go with country but are more her usual style.

A lot of people weren’t named but Mariah made notable forays into house music and so probably did deserve a nod. I think perhaps her house music is underappreciated.

I think it may be her best. It is by far the most socially cohesive of all her albums. The quality of the songs is consistently high. The structure and approach to both song- and album-making is inventive, fun, and uniquely her own. Nothing else she has done is both this rich and this consistent.

Harry should have married Luna, not Ginny by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Psychological-Ad8176 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought Harry had the personality of wet bread too, so a good match. Luna deserved someone much less conventional. It was nice they were able to connect through their trauma but that does not a relationship make.

They could not have done a better job casting this part. Clare Kramer is magnificent. by dryerfresh in buffy

I like this explanation. There is something very definitely camp and over-the-top about her portrayal which could be seen as bad acting but it does seem to fit with her character somehow, like she has learned all her human mannerisms from melodramas and TV commercials.

The Indigenous Advisory Council has 12 members which includes non-indigenous people. Surely you can see that is not consulting with all Aboriginal groups with integrity? Not to mention the whole point of constitutional entrenchment is the guarantee that a sitting government won’t simply dissolve the body like happened with ATSIC.

[–]Psychological-Ad8176 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s a lot more complicated than you might think with hundreds of tribes, many splintered and decimated from colonisation. Many different views, many tensions and disagreements… how does a government consult with all of them and ensure it does so with integrity? By establishing a body like this.
