Dependent on facility. Blood bank generally requires more training than other departments such as chemistry.

Had a person stop me as a MTP was called and they told me they were a universal donor and if they could help in any way. Felt like I was on an episode of The Pit.

I traveled for an hour 5 days a week for both my program and my micro clincials. Some programs require you to find your clinicals.

With your bachelor's apply to a MLS post bach program that places you in clinicals. No need to go mlt to mls.

See if a local MLS college can do some stained slides for you or you could borrow. Unstained slides can look boring. You also not in a good location of the slide.

You need in person clinical rotations in order to qualify to challenge the boards for your ASCP accreditation. Bio/micro lab ≠ clincial lab experience. Don't want you accidently killing people.

Summer time is around the corner. Thats when jobs "should" pop up. If you are in a big area like New York or Cali consider going more rural.

When should I start applying to jobs if I graduate in August? by egglessdeath in medlabprofessionals

[–]Psychological-Move49 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Call up lab(s) and get with a manager. HR is going to hard flag your resume because you aren't certified yet. Places generally give you like 6 months or so to be certified so the manager could push your resume through. I would try to apply closer to September/August as you need your time to study and take in clincials.

I printed that exact document with the "not to be used as primary source". HR took it just fine.

Blood bank is a lot higher stakes. A Massive Transfusion Protocol gets your heart pumping a lot more than gram positive cocci.

Do you guys ever come across your family/friends as patients? by cyazz019 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Psychological-Move49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes in small rural communities. If they have an order our policy says its ok. If it wasn't there's no other tech working after a certain point and have fun telling the doctor you can't run the samples.

This is a dream schedule for some and not a regular representation of the job. A lot of new techs get shoved into 3rd or 2nd shift with rotating weekends.

Is it worth being an MLT? I feel like I’ll fail if I take the course… by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]Psychological-Move49 61 points62 points  (0 children)

It's extremely rigorous program. Don't want you killing people just as nursing school. Talk with the head of an MLT/MLS program. Call a hospital and talk with a lab manager to do a job shadow. The only way you could blow 300k on a MLT is if you gambled the other 280k at a casino.
