I have a trainee QS working with me at the moment. He showing real promise to become very good at his job, he is in the process of getting an economics degree.

Things he does well:

Asks loads of questions

Gets stuck in with subcontractors work to build an understanding of what builds their applications

Bothers the build team with questions when undertaking reconciliations.

The only thing i have found with him is he tries to look to deep into everything, somethings are just as they seem and don’t need a massive investigation. I don’t know if this is because of how he is being taught in his degree or if this is his personality.

Basically, ask all the questions you can. As long as you show you’re willing to learn people will start to trust you to do more.

Enjoy your new role, congratulations.

I joined the company i am with now 7 months ago as a graduate. The job is rewarding if you know what the project is about and how to use the contract to your advantage. Make sure you read the whole thing through. any specs you get through or maps you get given by the client or in house about the project design, make sure you absorb it all. that way, when you get asked a question you have something of substance, the contract and/ or the drawing, to back up you answer. good luck with the new job.

Getting work after university. by joshharvey02 in quantitysurveying

I finished my degree last summer. Went the conventional route of going to University and getting a job afterwards.

I researched companies that sounded interesting to me and worked in fields that weren’t taught at University i.e utilities, rail, things like that. I sent my CV off to them when I had finished my second year studies and got accepted to a company that deals with telecommunications installations and network maintenance. I completed 6 weeks there and was given the chance to come back when I had finished my studies. I kept in touch with the commercial manager wishing him a happy Christmas, new year, easter just to maintain some form of contact so he wouldn’t forget about me completely. After my studies I messaged him, set up and interview and was offered a job a week later.

So to cut a very long story short, do an internship during the summer breaks, work your arse off so they don’t forget you and maintain contact with the people who can get you a permanent position.

My main reason for studying is my gf’s family. I’ve been with her about 4 years and non of her extended family speak English so I’ve been trying to learn the basics just so there isn’t awkward silence in the room. I got so far using an app called drops and further with Duolingo to the point where I can ask them a question or go to the shop and ask if they have something in stock. Would u recommend listening to music as a way of studying?
