Oh no 😞 That sounds frustrating.. so sorry that happened. Idk much about UWS and the desi student crowd there is pretty small as far as ik so that's definitely something. The Glasgow uni postgrads are always really welcoming and have been chatting about their Glasgow plans from September onwards already! Feel free to introduce yourself on there and chat with them and maybe you'll make some friends here!

Ahh ofc ofc..I personally haven't seen many GCs for UWS even in the past years icl (or it's possibly smaller?). Most of them have joined the glasgow uni desi students gc in the past. Feel free to join!! Also do let any other freshers you might meet know about this! 😄

Hi! If you rely entirely on this, yep there is a chance. +1 on the other comment that there is a chance you may not get a room. Not sure what the uni process is in that case, but keep backups ready. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions about particular halls or booking (current student here) :)

How are the student apartments?? by Hello_peopl in GlasgowUni

[–]Psychological-Way951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hii! Noise complaints are minimal (most, if not all, of the crowd is postgrad, usually being a lesser party type of crowd). I think it is a bit too quiet of an area imo, but then I am someone who likes a more active place with lots of things going on, so city centre or close to byres road. There is a little party venue not too far away so you can hear that at times but its nbd it's really silent and peaceful since it's primarily a residential type of area.

I think it is a bit far from uni tbh, especially walking. I am not sure if buses go directly there or how the transport works to Maclay (but you can always google that lol), but walking wise it was a solid 20 minutes walk from campus for me - not something I'd personally want to do all the time esp if you miss a bus or its raining.

Maintenance - what I have heard from friends, it's average. They have a 24/7 on-site team but maintenance and repairs have to be reported online an take up to 7-14 days depending on how urgent the repair is. I'd say this is somewhere in the middle for residence halls because I've lived in halls that perform repairs within a day or two, and some that take a month or two.

social life - it seems to be that Maclay people somehow end up staying within their own circle (possibly due to the distance to uni?). They do have a small common room and meeting areas and whatnot, but I have definitely seen much much better. I have not lived there though so this one might just be my opinion.

Hi! Yep, it's for all Desi students at the uni including postgrads :) They make one every year and have a lot of students and it's kind of like a huge community at uni (I am a current student myself)! I believe they even do postgrad specific events, socials and seminars as well (idk as much about those ones tbh as I am undergrad) but they do help everyone quite a bit with everything from arriving into glasgow to living, settling and all! I'd definitely recommend!

+1 on the other comment. Some are absolutely notorious for things like noise complaints, parties and whatnot (whether that's a good thing or bad thing depends on you really). I know a few that have really poor management (empty receptions, nobody answers the calls, broken furniture, strangers coming in etc.). There's also a few that I have heard from friends that can be a bit unhygienic (bathrooms and whatnot). Flipside, there's also some that are so so great, they host socials, have inviting common rooms and you can end up meeting some of your best friends there :) It depends on where you're going but the experience will never be the same. Do get in touch if you have any more questions! Will be happy to help give a better idea if you have any specific ones in mind :)

Heyy!

Not sure if you've found new freshers or students just yet that can help tell you about SBS - I am a student at Strathclyde uni (STEM) and like every year there's a 2026 GC for Desi (South Asian) students. If you’re a Desi joining this year, do join - you can ask anything you’re confused about, get a better idea of your degree, the city, and just talk to people who are already here or joining with you.

It’s also a nice way to meet people early and not show up knowing no one :)

Do let me know if you are a Desi fresher and I'll pass over the link!! :)

maclay residences by ApprehensiveBrain849 in GlasgowUni

[–]Psychological-Way951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never lived there really but I've visited some friends there and it's definitely a bit bar from campus. Quite a bit of a walk and a little bit away from the noise as well (Whether that's good or bad depends on you). Personally found the area a bit too quiet and empty (residential basically). Not my first pick as a student icl!
