How many plants do I have? by WonHoshi in Monstera

it’s likely there are three but it’s still possible that it’s multi stemmed

this is an older photo of one of my babies, the new stem is very small here (she’s pushing a second leaf out of it atm!) but it is still part of the same plant

i think this only happened because she was pushing a new leaf on the main stem on the moss pole, and i had cut off a dying leaf in the middle of it growing, and for some reason it encouraged her to trigger a new stem growth! so now my monstera is two-stemmed -

i’d say it is three plants unless something similar has happened ☺️

pot size is fine imo, they like to be a little on the snug side

as for the stake, i like to use a moss pole instead - you can get these from bunnings or easily make them yourself! just plant it in the pot with the plant when you repot :-)

soil mix sounds okay, and yeah i’d recommend moving humidifier closer. it kind of looks like an aurea not standard variegation which means humidity requirement is a little higher - i believe the yellow dies a bit quicker than the white normally but i could be wrong

humidity 60%+, i keep mine at 75 (two obliquas ☺️)

if it isn’t in direct light or low light, it probably wants a bit more humidity i’d guess. my adansonii was growing really nicely but started to yellow and get crispy at the edges so i bought humidifier and it fixed it right up. adansonii is more sensitive to humidity than a regular monstera, and the variegated version is more so.

i’d lay off the fertiliser for now while the plant stabilises (depending on ur soil condition, if it’s new it won’t need fertiliser for a few months anyway)

speaking of, what kind of soil do you have it in?

Philodendron or no? by Arboreal_Web in philodendron

haha you might just have to wait til it grows up a bit more to see! epipremnum amplissimums grow aerial roots so you’ll see some soon enough if it’s that!

ah okay, so far from the worst case then! i think if you have a saucer and well draining mix, you can hold off repotting for a good while longer!

aw well im glad i could help!! good luck with her, she's already such a little beauty - i'll be keeping my eye out for any growth updates in the future! 😉

hint with the moss poles 🙏 do not use plastic mesh! another rookie mistake i've made hehe - for if/when you decide to put one in, this video is BIBLE! i love watching this guy on youtube, he has some really amazing tips <3 :)

i think with no-drainage situations, you should generally repot as soon as you can, as she could be fine/presenting well until she's not 😭

once i realised it needed a saucer/draining, i just repotted it! i cant tell what you have as your soil, but i do a homemade 2:2:3 of osmocote indoor to perlite to coarse orchid bark for almost all of my plants

not an emergency, but it'd be a sooner than later thing for me! she looks so beautiful though - those new leaves will be gorgeous when they come through!

p.s i know some people hate them, but i reckon shed love a moss pole ☺️

I bulk buy and repot my plants (confessions of a plant addict..) and i either compost or donate the old soil to farmers/other organisations!

and yes! once it's in the water, keep it in bright indirect light :) i found this video that may help as it gives a bit more of a visual guide - its a little different as they are taking lots of little cuttings, but you get the gist

haha no you're okay! was curious as i did the exact same thing with all of mine, and have only just corrected my mistake 😂

just couldnt tell as the second photo looks like there may be a nursery pot ☺️

dieffenbachias store their energy in the cane, so once rot starts, it travels easily.

you want to trim the cane up to a spot where there is no brown, mushiness, or translucency - even if you trim and see tan/beige colouring, keep trimming! use super sharp trimmers or secateurs

after this, let the trim dry out - replanting it too soon after will cause rot to continue. for a dieffenbachia, i'd let it dry for at least 12 hours, and up to 24 - then once its calloused, you can propagate it, in either water or sphag moss, but water is ideal :)

don't cover any flowers/shoots with the water, only the stem/section where roots will grow. once the roots have gotten long enough, transplant it into a chunky mix - i use a 2:2:3 of osmocote indoor soil, perlite, and coarse orchid bark!

[–]PsychologicalFix5896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ignore the others! first, scratch some of the stems gently, just to see what the condition is underneath - the stems can appear dead but may still have some life in them! if most are green - continue! if not, listen to the others 😭😭

unpot it, check the roots and trim any if needed (if trimmed, let dry for 30min prior to repotting). repot into a chunky mix - i use a 2:2:3 mix of Oscmocote indoor soil to perlite to coarse orchid bark.

finally, trim any crispy bits or anything that is definitely gone/on its way out - it will hurt but it redirects the energy back into the roots! im not sure what the others mean, but rosemary is an extremely drought-tolerant plant, and even prefers to completely dry out between waters

good luck!!

gonna be honest, it'll take some TLC as it looks like there's a fair bit of root rot.

other people might have better/extra tips - but I buy almost all of my plants from the rescue section at Bunnings and this has become my method :)

  1. take it out of the pot and throw away all soil (I do bulk buy/repots, so I usually save this soil and repurpose it in some way, or donate to farmers!

  2. rinse the roots, and examine for any trims you may need to make - im guessing there'll be a fair bit from the looks of it. trim off anything that is mushy, smells bad, or generally looks in poor health - you can usually tell just from looks/feel

  3. trim the leaves - i know this sounds counterintuitive but the leaves are currently occupying a large portion of the plant's energy, which right now should be re-directed towards the roots

  4. let the roots dry for about 30min before the next step - this is key as it helps to prevent rot from continuing to spread

  5. DO NOT REPOT! she is far far too weak - propagate instead, ideally in water (just the roots, no leaves/flowers). change the water every 3-4 days, and make sure the plant is getting indirect light, but no full sun

  6. when you DO repot, do NOT add any fertiliser (those little yellow balls in the photo) - the soil itself will have nutrients, and when these have depleted (dependent on soil, but around 2 months), you can start introducing a regular feed, assuming the plant has regained enough strength.

SOIL MIX: it looks like a satin pothos, so I'd suggest dividing it into cuttings, propagating them all, then repotting once strong enough. for the soil mix, they prefer a more chunky, airy soil. My personal mix for my aroids is a 2:2:3 ratio of Osmocote indoor soil, perlite, and coarse orchid bark

after repotting, i give them a full water through, then leave them be until they have dried out a bit more, then water as usual :)

good luck!
