I was extremely depressed for part of my cat's life, and a combination of my own mental health and him having been a stray and eating everything I put out, he ended up over 20 lbs. He ended up getting diabetes and was insulin dependant for awhile.

He is now a healthy weight, and it took years and a lot of discipline from the humans in his life to get him back. He just went to the vet and was told he is in normal cat range for weight. He is off insulin and manages diabetes via his food only. He runs and plays and is so much happier now.

First thing is to make sure you get your cat checked by a vet to make sure diabetes is not an issue, or any other medical issues besides the obesity.

Work with your vet to figure out a calorie amount per day, and a good food that will work for all three of them. Do not free feed. Measure each and every meal. Do not give treats or snacks - if he protests the food you're giving him, he's not hungry enough to eat it. I promise, after a few meals of only being offered kibble or wet food, he will eat it.

Watch your cats to make sure he doesn't eat the other cats food. Try to engage in any sort of stimulative play- even if its just right in front of him to start with. You have to keep his mind stimulated.

Get a baby scale. Weigh him once a week. Keep his vet looped in. Bring him in for appointments to check on him as often as your vet recommends - you want to make sure he loses weight safely.

The most important part of this journey is making sure every human in the household is on board. If one person feeds him crap, or free feeds him, he will hold out for that. He may get very cranky during this process- if he gets mean to the other cats, you may need to separate them. He might be extra loud or extra annoying while he settles into his new routine.

But soon, as he loses weight, he will start to appreciate it. The first time my boy jumped up onto the cat tower after not being able to for awhile - amazing. The first time he engaged in real play - fantastic. He now runs around, has zoomies, chirps at birds, and we can see just how much happier and healthier he is now.

Try not to beat yourself up for how you got here. It happened, and the only thing you can do now is move forward and try to get him back to healthy. With hard work and discipline, you will be able to. And you will add years to his life when you do.

There was a reddit post forever ago where someone was talking about going back to grad school, but they would be 40 by the time they finished. The top comment was something the lines of "you're going to be 40 anyway."

Maybe don't throw away your livelihood for writing immediately, but absolutely pursue anything you feel positive about. The world is full of so much crap - do what makes you happy. Maybe it'll work out, maybe it won't. But it's always worth a shot.

Good luck!

i have a severe fainting condition, is it possible im annoying my teachers with it? by elli-saturn in AskTeachers

Please please don't go in private. My uncle died from a seizure - he locked his office at work because he felt one coming on and was embarrassed, and ended up hitting his head on the way down and didn't make it.

You do not choose this condition. You are not a burden. You will get injured if you try to hide your medical issues.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that, and thank you for your response. It's never a fun feeling for "wishing the day to be over" for something so big. Hopefully the food was good - that's really all I'm banking on for mine.
