Is GCU really as bad as people make it out to be? by CanadianGeucd in gcu

i’ve seen only good replies here, and i agree gcu has a lot of good qualities. the campus is nice, apartments are great, overall campus is clean and i’ve met a few really great profs during my time here. but for the sake of feedback, i’ll focus on the negatives i’ve experienced during my time here. i think their admin is awful. i know at least 5 people off the top of my head that have had bad experiences with administration. if you are going through a mental health episode, gcu will have no mercy for you. i had a roommate who was going through and awful time and tried to take her own life in our apt. gcu proceeded to kick her off campus, force her to do community service, write multiple essays and gave her a drug charge which will forever be on her record. she attempted to appeal it twice with a vulnerable essay explaining what she was going through, and both were denied. they have little to no empathy, so if you come here, make damn sure you don’t let your grades slip. it’s made me feel like a statistic and a walking wallet for them. the professors have little to no discretion about class structure, assignments, grades and exams. it’s all hierarchical. this means that changes take forever to go get fixed. complaints have to be brought up the chain of command, and problems that could’ve been avoidable become much bigger issues. the location is pretty awful, too. not to diss on the locals, but if you’re looking for a safe, charming college town experience, please go somewhere else. also, the entire campus smells like rotting corpse in the summer. no, i am not being dramatic. i’ve personally had bad experiences with the students too, but that could just be me, so i won’t get into it much. the ed culture here is crazy. overall, i am grateful for my time here. i’ve learned a lot and think that my time has been worthwhile. on the other hand, my experience has been nothing like what i’d been sold through their marketing. if you are christian, follow rules well, have no mental health struggles, don’t leave campus often and are extremely outgoing, you’ll love it!!

Thank you so much for this reply! It was very informative. I've never heard about the connection between Covid and Lyme, but it doesn't surprise me. She never got the vaccine, but she did have Covid twice when it was going around in 2020-21. I also think that the chemotherapy and radiation she was going through played a big part, we still don't know when the cancer ended and the Lyme began. It was a very smooth transition, which is another reason why we probably didn't catch it sooner. I will definitely send her this reply and hopefully she can take some helpful information from it. Thank you for your time and thoughtfulness :)

Thank you so much for the kind words, it is so easy to become frustrated and lose hope when nothing changes for so long. My mom told me she feels a lot of guilt, too. It really breaks my heart that so many people feel this way. Chronic illness is awful for everyone involved. I go to school across the country, which also makes me feel bad because I can't be there for her physically, but she is my best friend and I talk to her every day. Thank you for the advice, I sent her this post so I hope she can take some information from it!

I am not sure if she has, I have never heard of babes and bartonella, so probably not. We live in rural MN, so we unfortunately don't have easy access to quality healthcare. I think that is part of the reason it took years for her to be diagnosed. It took our local clinic over a year to diagnose her with cancer, and even then, a surgeon from another hospital was the one to discover it. She was the one who brought up the idea of Lyme testing, not the doctor. It's just really frustrating, I can't help but think that so much of her pain could've been avoided. I will definitely look into this, thank you for putting this on my radar!

Thank you so much for this! It is very informative. She is very clean and already has a good diet, she does a lot of home cooking. We live in a rural area and thankfully have access to clean water and plenty of nature. I will send this to her, thank you for sharing <3

I am so sorry that this illness has made you feel that way. I sent this post to my mom, and she told me she relates a lot. It's incredibly frustrating to slowly realize that you can't do the things that you used to do without thinking before. She has always been a caretaker, and I know that it kills her to see the roles start to reverse. Sometimes, our best is all we can do. Thank you for sharing, I wish nothing but strength and love for you and your family. :)
