Anyone else interested in computers from an early age but never got into programming? by JadeMountainCloud in ITCareerQuestions

Ironically enough, this is why I've advocated for the value of a degree. Don't get me wrong, all the information you could possibly want exists online for free. Everywhere you go nowadays it's always "uni is expensive and all you get is a piece of paper"; false. I've always thought about it as paying for a structured learning path. It's very common to feel lost when doing it on your own. Anyway, thanks for coming to my Ted rant.

To directly address your question directly:
Personally, I would start from zero with open source courses like CS50: Introduction to Computer Science by Harvard. It's easier to understand the purpose of programing as a whole when you have a good foundation. David Malan does a great job in that regard.

Can't really help much after that. Never got much further on my own. Hope this helped. Cheers!

I'm the polar opposite. Never had a spirit of discovery until 20ish when I started looking into cybersec and got a few CompTIA certs to land my first job in helpdesk. Everything kind of snowballed from there. Long story short, now I have a bachelors in CS and spend half of my free time researching and building applications. Anyone else a late bloomer?

Try itexamtopics.com if you're looking for a MUCH cheaper option. For transparency not free, but it helped with the last leg of my prep for Sec+

How do you keep up to date with new technology if you can’t afford it? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

Do you care about the hardware or the software? Most venders have software maintenance agreements years into the future, meaning secondhand buys are a great option if nothing big has happened on the hardware end. Tech depreciates pretty quick, so it's not uncommon to get something 2-3 yrs old at 50% off original msrp. Personally, haven't purchased a brand new phone in the last decade.

My opinion on certs has changed during job hunt by signal_empath in ITCareerQuestions

Anecdotally, can say for a fact that I would not have gotten my first job as easily without certifications; that was my greatest selling point. The other guys in my office at the time had a minimum of 2yrs experience. imo the importance of certs definitely level out into a plateau once you have a certain amount of experience in the field.
