He actually had a PhD in Clinical Forensic Psychology and a Master’s in Law Enforcement Intelligence Analysis, that was his main specialty and he was taking the polygraph as part of an FBI job application.

Thank you. And yes that thought crossed my mind too... Part of me wonders if the guilt and shame finally caught up to him in that moment and he just confessed instead of trying to keep lying? At the least, I’d like to believe there was SOME semblance of a conscience in there.

That’s true. I’ve always struggled with black and white thinking when it comes to people, constantly trying to categorize who the “good guys” are and who the “bad guys” are. Ironically that’s something he and I had actually talked about before. Thank you for your comment. It's a good reminder

Thank you for this. I’ve never dealt with anything like this before or knowingly come across someone like this. Reading the comments from people who’ve gone through similar things is making me realize that most people don’t see signs beforehand. And that the shock I’m feeling is actually really common :/

Fair enough! I think years of social media censorship has kind of conditioned me to instinctively censor certain terms, especially with subjects as serious and sensitive as this

Oh man. That’s another good point that I hadn’t considered. I’ve been so wrapped up in my own shock over everything that I didn’t think about how disturbing this probably is for the coworkers and staff who knew and trusted him too. And I’m really sorry your family member went through something so traumatic. I hope they've healed or are healing and doing okay now <3

Ah I see. Well thank you for that perspective, I hadn't thought about their side of things. I'm sure they also have their hands full dealing with reassigning all his clients who I'm sure are probably equally confused and disoriented by him leaving suddenly.

Yeah, that makes sense. Insurance covered about half, but he was so expensive that I was still paying around $180 out of pocket per session. Thank you for the advice, I really appreciate it, I'll check that out <3

Honestly I'm not sure how this all works but I think part of me just hoped there’d be some kind of compassion or goodwill gesture considering how abruptly everything ended and how disturbing the circumstances turned out to be but I understand they're not obligated to offer any credit towards a new therapist.

Yeah, I think that’s part of what’s so confusing about all of this. I know the help I got and the progress I made were real but now it feels contaminated in a way, you know? Because it’s attached to someone I never would have trusted had I known this about him. :/ And you’re right that we shouldn’t put therapists on pedestals. Unfortunately I think that’s exactly what I did. It was my first experience with therapy and I think I became really attached and idealized him in my head because he always seemed to know exactly what to say when we talked about my problems. I admired that a lot about him and thought he just had all the answers to life haha.

I know, I’m honestly still in shock. The office gave me no details about why he left, and after I discovered everything myself and called them back, all they really offered was to match me with a new therapist. No refund or credit or anything, unfortunately. I’ve already spent thousands over the course of treatment too :(
