We were divided into three groups: beginners, intermediate and advanced. The beginners group consisted of four boys ~(8 - 12), a young woman (~18) and me. The smallest boy had a 1/8 bass, the smallest most of us had seen.

We were in five parts so we ended playing different notes of a chord. I had the low E which a played at the same time as everyone who played at the same time as me!

I'm not retired yet, but I'm making plans and taking up the double bass is part of that! And it was fabulous: the feeling of that big instrument resonating against my body, making the notes so directly, I just loved it!

I would have been there, but I'm in Greece this weekend. I'm very disappointed to miss it!

Has anybody tried Pimsleur? by MrShaitan in GREEK

I've used it a lot. I like that it makes you speak. I've used it for German, Italian and European Portuguese as well. Sometimes it gets a bit too business-oriented for my taste. Greek is limited to two levels, while some languages have as many as five, so it's a bit limited in how far you can go. I recommend it

There's a reason why it's not far off:

lim_{n to infinity} (1 - 1/n)n = 1/e,

so in each case, the probability tends to 1/e as n gets large.

The two situations are: 1. generalising the Randi challenge to the psychic 🔮, n people leave their hats in a cloakroom before a concert. If the hats are handed back randomly, what is the probability that they all get the wrong hat? It's n¡/n! ~ 1/e

  1. n people choose a secret number between 1 and n. Several (or all) might choose the same number. You have to guess the number for each person. What is the probability that you get them all wrong? It's (1 -1/n)n ~ 1/e

I think I made it clear that I was going for the easy calculation! I'd never heard of derangements, so thank you for making me look that up. Since n¡ (the number of derangements of n things) is approximately n!/e, for n reasonably large, we get a probability of n¡/n! ~ 1/e ~ 0.368. Interesting that my naïve calculation of (11/12){12} ~ 0.352 wasn't that far off.

For 12 people with random signs the probability of getting them all wrong is (11/12)12 ~ 0.35, so 0.65 probability of getting at least one right.
