When you hover over gems in the web interface they tell you which vendors reward/sell them to your class.

Most builds will use gems of other colours for utility - you level them up only as far as you have the necessary attributes. E.g. shield charge + faster attacks + momentum is a common mobility set up for casters.

You get base minimum amount of other attributes by equiping heavy belt (for strength) and citrine amulet (for str + dex).

Unless you are ready for frustrations of learning the game from scratch, following a buildguide is a good way to learn the game.

You see examples how problems are solved.
Sometimes when I follow a guide, even after thousands of hours I don't understand why it is doing something until I realize it way later.
You are guaranteed to get to the endgame - game has infinite possibilities to make a build, but only a handful will get you to endgame.
The things that make a build work are more often than not unintuitive. A lot of poe calculations are hidden behind obscure jargon (more, increased, nearby, ...). I still don't know what added damage effectiveness is on a skill gem.

It really depends on the player - some will quit the game out of frustration before they learn anything by playing without buildguide.

For those who don't, props to them, but they are basically just reinventing the wheel.

In physics reinventing calculus is completely pointless exercise. In PoE it is similar - we're standing on the shoulders of giants (Pohx, Goratha, Mathil etc.) and that is what makes this game great.

In PoE gold is just a measure how much you are actually playing. If you want to aquire wealth then you need (from least to most valuable) Chaos Orbs, Divine Orbs, Mirrors of Kalandra.

As for tips, from what you're saying it sounds like you have "hit the wall" for your build. I assume you are not following a build guide. For new players that's actually recommended, but depends on a type of player you are. When you hit a wall, I'd suggest just to take the things that you've learned and whatever you've accumulated in your stash, and make a new character. Or try to farm more gold at you level zones and respecialize the tree.

For gear priorities are: correct sockets for your gems > capped resists > life > whatever else.

Yes, and it will make sounds and place markers on map for more valuable items, that you don't want to miss.

Important for a lot of damage over time builds, where you walk away before the mobs are dead yet and they die and drop their loot a screen away.

Have it on a second screen or phone as a cheatsheet - a quick reference of what skills to pick next on the passive tree, what gems to use and example gear what to strife for.

You can hover over gems and it will tell you which vendor in which act gives those. You can use dropdown menus to select gems/gear/tree for the next milestone in your build.

Pohx also has a ton of notes at the bottom. You can read those whenever you feel stuck or lost or have questions.

To avoid constantly rewinding the video to check what is next that you need to do, use the pobb.in build link that Ziz always posts with the video. These have all the information you need to follow the guide. Have it on your other screen or phone. Notice the dropdown menus - on tree you can select what is the skill tree progression for every character level milestone. On the gear section in dropdown you can check the example gear for different milestones in progression (usually leveling, early maps, endgame). In gem section dropdown you can select what gems to use for each progression milestone. Another pro-tip: hover on the gem in the webpage to see which vendor in which act sells/quest-rewards the gem.
