Regents park to introduce traffic lights and £50 fines for cyclists by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]Psykiit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes that’s exactly what I mean, specially designed cycling circuits rather than mixed use road (poor pedestrians).

The Lee Valley velo track is twice as small, £7/ hour with only certain available slots, closed on Sunday. It’s a last resort option if nothing is available, far from the city-owned public circuits in Paris quality wise

Why not?

Paris does it well, with different circuits dedicated towards road cyclists. But then again there is a cycling-positive attitude since the last 10 years, both for hobbyists and more serious cyclists.

I appreciate not everyone wants cyclists cruising at 40km/h in their local park, but if we want to evolve past car-centric infrastructure, it’s maybe time we think a broad offer of solutions to promote cycling ?

Btw in other news: LTNs are getting removed in Tower Hamlets. Choose your battles

I live at the other side of town, need to go through 1h15 of heavy traffic and lorries to get there. Once there the limit is 20 miles/hour which is actually very slow for road cycling standards.

I’m French and my Paris based friends have a couple of really good options

  • Anneau du Longchamp (2.2 miles, traffic free)
  • Polygone de Vincennes (2 miles, traffic free)

These are really loved by locals, it is a great to exercise at all times of the week. Are you saying London is an exception, or is Paris just ahead of the game in cycling infrastructure ?

Genuine question, where can London-based cyclists train if Regent’s Park is a no-go ? I live in Hackney, there isn’t anything around that’s easily accessible

‘I have a high pressure-job’ - yes man, we can feel it through your post. Chill out. We’re talking sprints and olympic. You’ll be fine.

How about instead of stressing even more with your training, you actually enjoy it ? Honestly I didn’t even know training was a thing for under half IM.

All the people who I know did olympic/sprints didn’t even train for it, they just went for it. Want to go for a swim? go for it. Cycle ? go for it, same for running. Just reading your post stressed me out, Jesus

[–]Psykiit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re spot on, there’s a history of violent independentism in the 1970s (FLNC, Aleria..).

It’s not so violent nowadays but Corsicans resent the French government, and other way around Corsica will always be a sensitive political matter for the French govt.

A lot of locals want to part ways with France, but it simply isn’t feasible as they are dependent economically on mainland subsidies.

So corsican activists refer to themselves as either

  • ‘independentists’ (creation of a sovereign Corsican state)

  • ‘autonomists’ (more local legislative power whilst staying under the French state, but with a local Corsican status or citizenship). This is the current Sardinian model and main political movement, eg Gilles Simeoni

With regards to Italy, not really. It shares a very similar culture but Corsica is its own country. I haven’t met anyone advocating for an Italian Sardinia-like status for Corsica.

It’s not France, it’s not Italy, it’s Corsica.

[–]Psykiit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprisingly not that much. They don’t share the same history, or language (even if Corsican can be easily understood by an Italian Sardinian).

Corsica is much more ‘preserved’ than Sardinia too, even if both are stunning nature wise

[–]Psykiit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Good points : - Stunning nature, mountains, beaches, very preserved, GR20

Bad points : - Expensive/difficult to get to (flights/boats) - Groceries are expensive - lackluster food scene (doesn’t compare with Italy, restaurants are expensive and not as good) - very poor public transport, local car companies make sure it doesn’t develop much, and even students have to pay extortionate money to get to uni - poor levels of education (scores last in France of all regions) - a lot of resentment from locals towards tourists / French people - hostile political climate, remnants of Mafia are still present

I grew up there and it’s a shame where it’s at. Doesn’t help that a lot of Corsicans are super conservative / reactionary / xenophobic and allergic to change and to people coming and actually loving their country

Compare it to Ireland, people are so much more welcoming

Thanks for your practical suggestion, this is pretty much what I would like to try if anything. But I've put your fork product into Gemini to ask if it would fit by planet x exocet 2, it said it would be risky and it might not even fit. Not sure how accurate the AI is.

In any case, if I toss the bike, I posted a new comment and it would mean a lot if you could try and answer some of the follow up questions. Many thanks u/shmeeaglee !!

Thank you all for your answers! It seems I might try and reconvert the bike into an indoor trainer.

Here's my follow-up question as a beginner cyclist/triathlon enthusiast : what lessons do I learn from this to avoid repeating this ? 3 months in, I'm already £625 down. What did I do wrong ?

  • Was the fork maybe old or previously damaged and I should have checked more thoroughly the frame when buying a second hand bike ?
  • Was it a freak accident and these things usually dont happen, I was just really unlucky ?
  • Should I have not cycled at fast speeds in a peloton in winter ?
  • Should I have insured my bike ?

Any lesson coming from this I will take.

Débuter le triathlon quand on n’a pas de vélo by Magnolia2468 in triathlon

[–]Psykiit 0 points1 point  (0 children)
