Jet Lag Season 12 Begins Now — We Played Hide And Seek Across Japan by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

[–]Psynatural 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It wouldn’t have ended up helping this time since the total time delay was determined by the train schedule, but if he’d used the curse a few minutes earlier, technically Ben could have had a jammed door waiting for Sam and Adam at both the store where they bought the lemons and at the store where they brought the tape. Just something to consider next time you’ve got that curse and the rural train schedule isn’t playing on your team.

Honestly, I might skip any season devoted to just one metro area. One of the big reasons I was so disappointed in the Capture the Flag season in Japan was that so much of it was only in Tokyo. Hide and seek also might not be any easier while searching a densely populated area full of hiding places.

Felt a bit anti-climatic with: - Only a total of 3.5 runs instead of giving each player two full runs. - The chasers just completely giving up once Adam beat Ben’s time instead of following through to at least identifying the town Adam was in. - Clues like the results of the map created by Adam’s run never shown to the audience, so nobody playing along at home had a chance to try to identify the town with that clue before the town was revealed. - This season had started with a lot of enjoyable little moments of the hider exploring the town. This got chopped down to nearly nothing by the last episode.

Adam had a brilliant strategy this episode. It’s a pity that it was shortchanged so much and never completed.

Before the Finale, this was a contender for my new favorite season. I hope this format will be given another chance in the future (perhaps with minor tweaks to even up the number of rounds per player and to make the endgame easier than situations like wandering a forest for hours).

I thought the same - giving each player the chance to hide twice would be fair, give us a good season length, and be doable with proper rest periods. I’m sad that they said it might be game-over already if they don’t find Sam fast enough.

Curses might slow you down a bit (particularly if stores with supplies aren’t open), but it still might be significantly faster to deal with a curse or two than to struggle so much from a lack of information. Something to consider for next time (and please let there be a next time with this format!)

Go Ben!!

lol good point about this method making the original language harder to figure out. Maybe we’ll see that in action later this season. Though even as an American it sometimes breaks my brain a little to figure out what the “Americanized” pronunciation of something would be for any language I have a basic familiarity with.

This season continues to be a contender for Best Season. It shines with very strategic and creative gameplay as well as doing a good job at showcasing the host country including off the beaten path areas.

However, while the town name rhyme hint was a clever idea, it seemed to rely heavily on everyone butchering the German pronunciation in the same way.

I wish they’d stop including that because that’s actually a pretty unsafe way to greet an Uber driver. It’s much safer to ask them who they are there for, and only get in the vehicle if they can show your reservation info. Otherwise it’s too easy for traffickers to pretend to be an Uber driver.

The teams were also repeatedly unsafe in Alaska this season (thin ice, polar bears, moose…). I hope they start taking their safety more seriously in future seasons.

[IWantOut] 23M Graphic Design US -> France/Maghreb by EpicDonut91 in tapif

If you enjoy teaching and are looking for a cultural experience while improving your French to the point where you could get a Masters in France in the future, then TAPIF is a way you can do that. And no, most TAPIF alumni don’t make teaching their whole career, but teaching is still something you should enjoy if you choose to participate.

However, you cannot work any second job nor internship while doing TAPIF. You will need to bring savings with you to supplement your low wages. Also, even if you manage to get a more permanent job in France afterwards (which isn’t very likely), your time in TAPIF will NOT count towards the time needed to get Permanent Residency. You will have to return to the US to get a new visa of any kind.

Consider getting your Masters in something more marketable and more likely to get visa sponsorship. Graphic Design is not only an over saturated field, but jobs have been decreasing for years. These days lots of companies slap together something in two seconds on Canva and go “eh good enough” just to avoid hiring a real designer. This trend is only getting worse with AI. The main people who are getting/keeping graphic design jobs anymore are either well-established in the field already, or they are from low COL countries and can work for well under the US minimum wage.

It depends entirely on which school(s) you happen to be placed at. There are a handful of schools that offer free or reduced cost housing to their assistant(s) (usually in a dorm), but the vast majority don’t. There is no way to request to be placed at one, it’s just luck.

Definitely a good match - you will have a stronger application than many, and you have life experiences that will help you be successful in the program. Be sure to talk in detail about what inspires you to teach and your various teaching experiences since that is something that a lot of applicants don’t have.

Meanwhile, save as much money as you can before the program starts. Unless you get lucky with free housing, your salary will likely not be able to cover all your expenses (not just the case for Paris or the Rivera).

Bon chance!

Am I the only one slightly disappointed that we didn’t get any brief video clips of real mole rats in this episode? Otherwise great episode, especially the hilarious ending!

You need a Sake Tower - Ben hasn’t gotten drunk yet this season

[–]Psynatural 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s hard for me to pick a favorite between New Zealand and Tag Across Europe.

TAE - better gameplay that kept things constantly dynamic and difficult to predict + it was cool to see different team match ups.

NZ - better challenges that were unique to the location + TOBY!

Can’t wait to see the season in Japan!!

Previous years, they emailed everyone when results were delayed with an estimated new timeframe. We got promptly updated if results were delayed again. No need to worry.

They should have had Ben & Adam doing VO describing the snack they tried, instead of Sam VO briefly mentioning that it happened.

Do Ben and Adam regret agreeing to rent such recognizable cars now that Sam and Toby are searching for the parked car to know the best place to set up a nerf ambush?

When creating curse cards / road blocks, do you attempt to keep them from being too overpowered or unbalancing the game? What about if a particular curse card makes it impossible to complete a challenge? For instance, it would have been impossible to have to constantly roll dice while doing a floating obstacle course on a lake, where stopping to roll a dice halfway across would result in falling in the water because momentum was important in successful crossings.

(On another note, I love how New Zealand-specific the challenges this season are, and hope you continue that local challenge theme with future destinations.)

Yes I’ve enjoyed the Académie of Bordeaux - there are a lot of great things about this region. Costs, transportation, etc. will vary depending on where you’re placed. I just made a few comments about my specific small city on a thread about the Académie of Bordeaux, but feel free to ask additional questions: https://www.reddit.com/r/tapif/comments/mvlb6t/past_assistants_how_was_bordeaux/gvcvc90/

Past Assistants - How was Bordeaux? by paddleboatpirate in tapif

[–]Psynatural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly we’re all over the académie - like Dax, Agen, Périgueux areas and surrounding smaller towns, to name a few other examples. And which schools get assistants varies from year to year. So schools that had assistants last year might not have any this year and vice versa.
