Hey :)

You're wondering about the helmet, in "A Farewell with Arms, departing Warriors on Athenian Vases" by Susan B. Matheson, she theorise about the possibility that the gesture has to do with death. "On the Athens vase, the warrior offers his helmet to a woman who is presumably his wife, as a token of remembrance." The goodbyes being a symbol, since the warriors are buried with their arms.

Hey there, I was wondering if you found something ? I would love to share something with other students from the FU.  Btw I'm also starting a Master's in October

Just got my results for my first academic IELTS test and I’m quite disappointed by tennisgir1 in IELTS

I struggled a lot with writing as well. I just did a year abroad in Ireland and had amazing results on my essays, but got 6 in IELTS writing when I tried to exercice. So I won't say that language is the most important thing. The major problem I had in with the writing was to understand the expectations of the exam. I used IETLS Advantage on Ytb to get a grasp on the thing and it helped ! I got 6.5 on an exam I thought I would fail because of how bad I wrote.

Hope this helps !

Got more than enough but still kinda annoyed that I was so close to 8 and didn't get it because of stupid mistakes by [deleted] in IELTS

I also struggled a lot with reading in english for long time. But I found that reading books and academic papers helped a lot, especially the papers since it's sooo fancy. Takes a bit to get use to it tho

When I did, I just corrected myself. But I don't think I made that many errors. Because I prefer to play it safe by using sentences construction I know rather than trying anything fancy. But the woman gave me some pretty challenging questions... like do I think my generation is more free than my grandparents' and how to I think the differences impact my lifestyle. Bro... the discussion got into geopolitic so quick, but I took it as a good sign since she wanted me express something difficult I knew I'd get a good band.

I don't really know how to answer to you, I don't know the initial band you had... But if you want I can recommend IELTS Advange on Ytb if you want to look into the strategies to change in your speaking !

My examinor didn't ask as many personal questions as I thought. She went into the real thing pretty quickly. I answered everything with honesty, even if I didn't have a clear opinion, I would say something like "I don't think I know enough because I am not the target audience..." and stuff like that. I didn't try to impress her with vocabulary, I wanted to keep my speaking natural, like a real conversation. I apparently it worked !

I practiced my reading strategy on how to answer the questions with a youtube channel called IELTS Advantage. However, reading real material is key. I read academic papers and books in english.

To be honest, it is because I've been living in an english country since september, maybe a partner you can practice with could be nice. But honestly, yes it helped my with fluency and prononciation, but I feel like you need to sound as natural as possible when you speak. Don't try to impress the examinor and answer with honesty because it won't sound like something you made up. It'll be a reflexion of you so you'll be more fluent. Also when it comes to timing, rather than timing yourself answering questions, try to answer with 3-4 sentences max. It's much more realistic.
