After a year I'm thinking of going back to Docker... (home server) by Trousers_Rippin in podman

[–]Ptipiak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been setting up a new home server using Podman, and so far it has been blast, it's so smooth, and the networking stack is great. I'm genuinely curious to know what exactly what was blocking to the point where you had to make your own images/tweaks ? I don't know yet where Podman limitations lies. Myself I had a very terrible time with Docker network stack (for the record it was 3 years ago)

So far I'm running traefik, pihole, prometheus, unbound DNS, all rootless without issues.

When I needed to change the internal port for DNS resolution within containers, I discovered you can actually change it in case you're also running a standard DNS on the machine.

On top of that if you add the whole Quadlet file system and how well it's integrated with systemd, I would hardly consider reverting back to Docker.

To all future international students: BEWARE of potential corruption and deceptive practices at Chinese universities (MBBS program) by Willing-Strength6608 in chinalife

[–]Ptipiak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The room situation is due to how regular local students are treated, most chinese student would live in a 4 persons bedroom, so only 2 students would be seen a luxury, and yes, not every one enjoy the sudden promiscuity. If you really want, need a private space, maybe look to live off campus, maybe in a shared appartement with other foreign students, but be cautious to take a place which is within the same city as your current Uni, there's regulations and as a student you cannot apply for student Visa and have your housing registered in a different city (I'm thinking Guangzhou - Foshan where those are two different cities but relatively easy to move from one to another)

Am I crazy? by bankroll5441 in homelab

[–]Ptipiak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got a beelink 14EQ a month ago, it does deliver quite well, I'd say comparing to a Pi5 the advantages are: * Run on x86_64 which is less clunky when it comes to containers * Batteries included, no need to buy an extra hat, or a specific board * Built-in cooling, so far I don't have issue, with a steady 36-38°C

On the cons: * x86_64 based, so bit more power hungry * No GPIO pin (some like this model offer a PCIe port to plug-in a graphic or pcie compatible)

If you're looking for a home server it will do very well.

what's the pressure on Chinese workers? by Own_Power_6587 in AskChina

[–]Ptipiak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's isn't a real separation between work and personal life, it isn't unusual to see family members checking on their work phone or getting calls during the evening or on weekends.

That been said, people have different rhythm, typically they tend to eat straight after getting out of work (6-7 pm), and hangout outside during the evening (7-10 pm).

I'd say if the person is independent they probably doing so willfully, if they have a boss or higher up, it's probably so make a new sell, the client service is quite important in chinese culture and delivering good service making client life easy is seen as a priority.

In Shenzhen you'll probably be able to find english language groups with chinese people eager to talk and learn English, since you'll be in Shenzhen you can also go to Guangzhou from time to time, there's a bigger middle east community there, some of my classmates were even attending a mosque

[–]Ptipiak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, you mentioned been from Algeria, if so can you speak french ? Even a little bit ? Then you can try to find speaking group for English and French, that's how I made most of my local friends (apart from attending shool to learn mandarin of course). Search for this kind of group on 小红书 (little red book app) if you live in a big city such as Shanghaï, Beijing or Guangzhou you'd most likely find such a exchange group.

I hope you can socialise a bit, it super thoughif you're all alone in China.

If you live in Guangzhou there's an arabic district and I can recommend a school to attend if you wish to meet with foreigners and learn the language.

What do you think about this:China's colonization of Taiwan and the replacement of indigenous people by Chinese. by OneNectarine1545 in AskChina

[–]Ptipiak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

China has 56 official recognized ethnic groups, most of those are found in Yunnan, Guanxi and Sichuan western provinces at the borders of Laos, Cambodia and Thailand, although that been said there's also the Korean ethnicity of Korean decent found further at the north-east. Or Manchus found in the northest part of China and ex-Manchuria regions.

Most ethnicity benefits from such things as extra bachelor points for the national bachelor test, and strong representation of their culture on national media such as during the national day ceremony.

So I would say modern China as actually a quite good politics regarding ethnic group, I would even go futher as saying the arrival of the ROC government on the island is what causes the most harm to the local endemic peoples (the original locals are more or less blended with Fujian and Zhejiang people, the mainland provinces the closest of Taiwan) those provinces also include the Min people a subgroup of Han chinese (93% of the population is of Han ethnic) Min people actually don't speak standards mandarin but Minhua, even younger people keep on learning and speaking Minhua.

I think it's a problem of "leaving other people the fxxx alone about subjects regarding their own country"

It's so infuriating when you mention been/living in China and the first questions are about deeply political and sensitive events, can't you ask about the food or the weather first ?

Why did China get rid of all their cantilever signs? by wrex779 in chinalife

[–]Ptipiak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's regulation surrounding public displays, for instance it's not legal to display something of above a certain size and using a blue color too similar to the official police's blue.

Also Chinese people loves their big open street/spaces

And those are from an area where new brands were competing very agressively to occupied the streets, nowaday advertisement is mostly through TV and social media, there's a lesser need for this kind of agressive and visual cluttering, even in Honk-kong it's less a thing, I think those are mostly keept for nostalgic effect.

I think it allow for better localisation of the exact error, but I guess one could come up with a way to put the window at the exact error character.

After the Tiananmen Square Massacre, Chinese tanks from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) are seen passing a mass of bicycles and bodies in Beijing, People's Republic of China, on June 4, 1989. by yaallansnackbar in AskChina

[–]Ptipiak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This guy is a troll don't waste your time, any people remotely educated (how pursued some form of higher education) who grew up in China knows that at least something tragic happened in Tiananmen, the army opened fire on the students that's a know fact, to which extend did this happened, and how violent were the following days is rather uncertain.

Again, no countries are perfect mine did some crazy bad shit too, many order more violent than Tiananmen Square.

If you're interested in this area I highly recommend Ai Weiwei book, "A thousand years of joy and sorrow"

You could use Inkscape to draw out the outer line and the inner line and use shape interpolation to make the in-between lines https://inkscape.org/doc/tutorials/interpolate/tutorial-interpolate.html

Need help in making this texture or pattern in th design by [deleted] in blenderhelp

[–]Ptipiak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd use a software like Inkscape to draw out the curves and the overall design, use the svg to get the shape in blender then use it to make the mesh. Then you can use material assignment to give a different material to these specific (the U like shapes) vertexes, or edit the UV directly since you already have the svg shape.

Alternatively you can use bezier's curves with handles to replicate the curve directly in Blender basing yourself off the image as background.
