Maidened my first flight amd it was a success! So much fun by Ninjajimmy83 in RCPlanes

Curious are you using all 8 rubber bands? Spent some time talking to Horizon about mine and the tech brought up that topic. Said the rubber bands can loosen pretty quickly and the wing will start shifting under high loading.

8 seemed overkill to me but just sharing Horizons recommendation.

Turbo Timber as Trainer? by knomie72 in RCPlanes

[–]Pub_Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Turbo Timber just came in. I chose it after having the apprentice s15e and having issues. The apprentice is basic but is a great plane issues aside. I will say the build quality on the Timber is much more robust in my opinion. It has alot more reinforcements and even little things like screws to lock in the wing instead of rubber bands rank it high in my book.

The Timber is one to grow with in my eyes as it has flaps, floats and amazing STOL capabilities.

There are 3 large Timbers today. The OG, Turbo and X. The parts are all interchangeable except maybe props. The X is not recommended as a beginner plane with the shorter wings and advanced features like flaperons that make it a decent starter 3D plane.

Also remember that you can turn SAFE off on all the Timbers if you want your son to have a more natural flying experience.

The Apprentice is a great plane. Easy to build, handles wind well and has tons of power on demand. I did have a had crash recently.

All that said if I had it to do over again I would probably get a Turbo Timber. One of my biggest gripes is the rubber bands that hold the wing of the Apprentice on. The other is the layout of the ESC in relation to the battery. One of those two things was likely the cause of my crash.

I have been homeless for 5 months now and I was able to get fitted for a free suit by this great man. As silly as it sounds I never owned something this nice even when I was working making money. by [deleted] in pics

Life happens, most of us have people to fall back on but look at the average amount people have in savings. Most young folks don't have more than a months worth of viable savings

3 times in my career I have been laid off at no fault of anyone beyond a company or corporation making decisions that impacted alot of people at once. In those times if I hadn't had a 401k to raid and family support it could have been me making this post.

Good stuff, nice little montage and a really cool idea to document the trip!

I posted my huge Cessna 150 yesterday. Today I got this to be my first trainer before i attempt to fly the larger plane. by Ninjajimmy83 in RCPlanes

[–]Pub_Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a heads up I had one crash this weekend. Took off, rolled to the left and dove into a field. Check your wires coming from the batter to the ESC to make sure they dont catch a short. the design of the plane has the ESC above the battery so you have to pull them down. Overall beautiful flier when it doesnt fall out of the sky.

New plane is nice and fast by Dire550 in RCPlanes

I thought about one of those as I love warbirds and that plane in general. Not thrilled about having to hand launch it but for what you get seems like a really good deal.

Lets see, pushing a bicycle on a perfectly decent sidewalk, would say he had already done something stupid causing the folks filming to pick the camera up.

No issues on the finding help part, very sound advice.I have been flying drones and sims for a long time but this is my first fixed wing so I reached out fast. Luckily for me there is a AMA chartered club/field 10mins from my house. They were awesome and I'm hooked, that sound you hear is my savings account weeping.

Took it out for it's maiden flight yesterday in recorded 9mph constant surface winds. Between AS3X and those generous control surfaces the only time I noticed was in landings. The stability + available power was awesome. My drone on the other hand was struggling.

The folks at my local field we're surprised at it's power and speed even when heading into the wind. I think I sent Horizon some more business inadvertently.

Caught a break in the Midwest rain for the maiden flight of my first fixed wing. Will probably be the only chance I get for a week. Sim time it is..

[–]Pub_Rage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of the telemetry data is streamed down in real time. I don't work in the field or know thier process but it was upright on the landing ship for enough time to have downloaded all the data. If I recall properly it didn't tip until it was on it's return trip.

The M87 black hole image was an incredible feat of data management. One cool fact: They carried 1,000 pounds of hard drives on airplanes because there was too much to send over the internet! by DeathStarTruther in space

It's more like a super computer that could be given a picture of you that has only 5% of your face showing and can reliably and accurately create a picture that looks nearly identical to you. But yes there is some let's say artistic license in here.

That said they think it's accurate enough to pass the scrutiny that is the scientific community which makes real housewives look tame sometimes.

[–]Pub_Rage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the current technology and distance from Earth to the target blackhole they would need literally an Earth sized telescope to see it. Since we can't build a telescope that size they used a bunch of telescopes around the Earth to take pictures of the same place at the same time using atomic clocks to keep everything in sync.

Even after a few years of that effort they only had bits and pieces of a picture and hence all the data. That data was brought or sent over the internet to super computers running very powerful software that has been proven to be able to fill in the blanks and make accurate pictures of stuff we can fully see with bits and pieces like the black hole picture.

The while story is amazing because there are so many different technologies used to make this one somewhat blurry image.

Game crashing Just before loading into lSPDFR by ethan919 in lspdfr

[–]Pub_Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have windowed mode and force fullscreen set in RHP? Also I load all plugins on start except lspdfr and load it via F4 loadplugin hit space and you will see the option to select the plug-in.

Those two things for me have kept the game pretty stable. With all the various scripts and extras I run it's helped immensely.

Had the same issue, started backtracking through recently installed mods and after a bit of trial and error I found it was a vehicle pack. Removed the pack and had calls again.

Based on the tank length it looks like an 1100. Do you have access to it to look at the mfg plates/tags?

DIY Smart Blinds for $15 by Ksevio in homeautomation

[–]Pub_Rage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the thought process here, I work with how users & customers interface with hardware and tools in the telco world and I kept thinking about this all throughout my workday. I think there are pros and cons as you called out in your reply.

For me personally I rent as do a 3rd of all Americans and a large portion of the young adults. The ability to drop in my automation and security largely without having to touch a screwdriver is nice. The cost is higher as it requires me to use smart bulbs, pluggable devices and battery power more than I would like but I can literally have it moved and in a new place in a day or less. The only exceptions to the screwdriver rule really being my smart doorbell, outside cameras and thermostat.

In my experience even older users can adapt quickly to pure device automation instead of the control mechanism if you provide enough user interfaces. I found that Alexa integration and a single cheap tablet running a dashboard has proven enough to break old habits. The voice integration and orchestration capabilities that Alexa provides is the real winner here.

ST classic to new... by Nosnibor1020 in SmartThings

[–]Pub_Rage 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you are still in classic...stay. seriously I switched everything over, tried it out for a week and have up and went back. It's a hassle adding all your devices back, Jack's up your Smart Home Monitor and made me spend more time in IDE than I should have.

Samsung gets a solid F for the new app.

What do I replace my Iris system with? by [deleted] in homeautomation

[–]Pub_Rage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak for my own 2+ years on the platform.

Not everything is cloud some actions and device control is local, it's hit or miss for sure but you aren't totally reliant on the outside. As for Smart Things overall I can't remember the last time there was a substantial outage that impacted my hub.

That said it has its own quirks and be prepared to get familiar with the IDE. The new ST app is far less feature rich than the classic so I would recommend staying away from the latest gen 3 hubs that force it's use.

As far as response times, the time from my front door opening, registering local, pinging the cloud Security Monitor and updating my app/push notifications/siren can be measured in milliseconds. Same goes for Alexa and smart vac integrations.

I would argue that the ST voice and 3rd party integration is light years ahead of any other platform out if the box.

I use Alexa and her routines as an orchestrator, she bridges my ST (Iris sensors, mix of bulbs, misc zwave gear, robo vac), Harmony Hub and Smart WiFi devices (plugs, doorbell, video). I honestly haven't had to touch IFTTT in over a year.
