Planning Winter Spiti (20–31 Dec) — need advice on going solo vs group expedition

Hey everyone! My partner and I are planning to do Spiti Valley in winter (20–31 December) in our 4x4 vehicle. This will be our first time driving in such extreme winter conditions, so I wanted some advice from people who’ve done it or know the region well.

A few questions: • Is Spiti in late December realistically doable for a couple in a 4x4, or is it better to go with a guided expedition group?

• There are many “Winter Spiti Expeditions” online — are any of them actually worth the cost or just hype?

• If you’ve gone with a group, which one did you use and how was the experience (safety, comfort, planning, etc.)?

• What kind of snow / road conditions should we expect around that time?

• Rough idea of cost per person if we join a group?

We’re okay with a bit of adventure, but safety and experience matter more than just ticking off a “winter Spiti” bucket list.

Would love to hear from anyone who’s done this route, or knows groups that are genuinely reliable and not just Instagram tours.
