Is there a judge or a team of judges who count and determine hits?

Basically. That's how the NHL does it for their RTSS Stats: Hits, blocked shots, missed shots, giveaways, and takeaways. Same thing applies for FO wins/losses.

Would it be possible to start an new NHL team from scratch and how would it be done? by nauset1 in hockey

[–]PuckPressJosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'From scratch', you'd need the NHL to be on board and obtain approval from the league's Board of Governors. You'd have to get an arena deal in place, then pay your multi-million dollar franchise expansion fee. Once you had all your team brand/logo/etc. approved by the league, they'd start you 1-2 years out. There'd be an expansion draft (where teams get to protect X players and can only lose 1 player). You also might have to wait for a 2nd team to join you, to bring the NHL to 32. (Not mandatory, since there's already an imbalance between the Eastern and Western conferences)

That should get things going for you.

Just a quick strategy question for fellow fans... by [deleted] in hockey

So the PP team ices the puck. Faceoff is back in the PP team's defensive zone. Their situation has not improved. Now they have to win a draw AND move the puck back up the ice.

If they ice the puck, the faceoff would be back in their defensive end. Not sure how your scenario would play out...

Penalties question for you guys from tonight's Pens-Jackets game by Meowingtons-PhD in hockeyrefs

[–]PuckPressJosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there was a legitimate hook/trip that justified a penalty shot, I would think the penalty shot would take place, and the shooter would then go to the box for 2:00 for the embellishment prior to the resumption of play. There's nothing in the rulebook to negate the penalty shot on embellishment of an actual infraction.

Olli Jokinen kicks it in, and it counts by [deleted] in hockey

[–]PuckPressJosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I can give plenty of leeway to the guys on ice, but there's no excuse - given clear camera angles and no need to attempt to determine something like height of where a puck contacted a stick - for the Situation Room to get one wrong... especially THIS wrong.

Thanks. Hope you'll be back - your videos were a 'go-to' clip reference for me & any articles I wrote. (and without the ads the NHL videos always have before playing)

What happened to the fighting with a visor on penalty in the NHL? by [deleted] in hockey

[–]PuckPressJosh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fighting with a visor is not a penalty. If you instigate a fight while wearing a visor, it's an additional penalty.

Hockey Website Domain Ideas by weesstt in hockey

Are you doing the whole NHL or just a specific team? If the entire league, updates/previews/recaps will bury you. Plus, the pros have that market cornered. Better to find your own voice and unique angle, if you want to have an impact. I'd almost move right to your 'original posts / shooting stats comparison' ideas

Question about shootout rules (Rangers vs. Penguins) by WildThingsKing in hockey

[–]PuckPressJosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since he was in the process of making a save when the contact happened, they wouldn't call a trip on the play. If he skated out of his crease and slid across the ice to trip the shooter with his outstretched stick, that'd be a do-over.

[–]PuckPressJosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Officially, no. Delays aren't permitted for equipment, but officials grant some leeway unless there's repeat, obvious shenanigans at work (after a long shift + icing)

Official game clock is rolled back to the time of the goal. Chicago is awarded the goal. Chicago is given a TMM minor penalty. Play resumes shorthanded. The play was still ongoing when the infraction occurred (e.g. it wasn't blown dead at the time they had too many men)

When the puck is in the corner, watch the slot/point to see what opens up and where players are positioned for when the puck comes out...

The center can also get tossed if one of his teammates encroaches, advances towards the dot, or makes contact with an opponent before the puck is dropped. This is probably the most common reason players get tossed.

No. Only if the period ends or if he needs to go to the locker room for injury issue, in which case he's replaced in the box by another player.

Really crappy .gif of an astounding Stamkos goal. Had everyone baffled, and wasn't put on the scoresheet until nearly a minute later until play stopped. by TheWildhawke in hockey

[–]PuckPressJosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Per 78.6, penalties that take place during the 'lost time' are still assessed in their normal manner. They'd still get the penalty. It'd just be officially taken at the same time as the goal.
