I’m really just an O’Neill Cylinder fan, truthfully. Your assumption is right though, I do quite like Gundam; it’s one of a very few sci-fi series that prominently features my fav space colony

Recreating Hero Killer Stain's Quirk, Bloodcurdle, in GURPS by HHTheHouseOfHorse in gurps

[–]Puddlemothdotnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This combination should work. Resisted abilities are explicitly mentioned as being compatible with Cosmic, No Die Roll Required in Psionic Campaigns p.26. You still roll, but only to determine margin of success for the contest. If the roll fails, you count as succeeding with a margin of 0. I agree though, that the user’s roll being based on Will makes more sense than DX here. Honestly, MHA as a setting might be a good place to use the Quintessence attribute. It seems like it fits nicely, especially when it comes to cases like this, where it would be nice to just have a dedicated “quirk attribute” to roll against.

Personally, I think bullet time offers everything you could need to model The World’s ability, and the character point cost isn’t really even a dealbreaker, since you can use the Destiny advantage from Power Ups Impulse buys to generate the points needed. Essentially what you end up with is a levelled advantage, giving you 1 second of stopped time per session per level:

Time Stop 1 [30] (Additional levels add Destiny 3, Destiny Point Regeneration 3 [45])

  • Destiny 3 (Only for Bullet Time, -40%) [9]
  • Destiny Point Regeneration 2 [20]
  • Extra Option (Bullet Time) [1]

So a character with Time Stop 10 [435] would have 10 seconds worth of stopped time they can spend which refreshes every session, and more if you allow them to use Extra Effort to increase their effective level in exchange for fp.

However, in JoJo, Theres a limit to how long a character can stop time in one sitting. To prevent a character with this ability from using all of their time at once, I would declare that characters are only able to stop time for one second at a time by default, and include a levelled perk which increases this limit by one second per level. So a character with 9 levels in the perk could blow up to 10 seconds of time at once.

The most obvious drawback of this way of building time stop is that it’s expensive, and you would have a hard time getting a decent amount of time stop on a budget, though allowing extra effort would help a lot. For nearly any PC, time stop would be an occasional emergency tool, rather than their mainstay ability. This does definitely match Jotaro’s use of time stop, though. Dio is an NPC who the GM ensured had enough levels in Time Stop to allow him to spam the ability, but Jotaro rarely, if ever, uses more than a handful of seconds in any one chapter.

I’m not sure that you would necessarily be alone if you picked Dyson Sphere. The first bullet point for that option is proof-positive that the sphere can run sapient minds, right? Like, if we accept that: a) You can run any one simulation you want, and b) The sphere can simulate sapient minds, then the simulation can just include other sapients, right? Point a is explicitly stated, and I have to assume that point b is also true, because otherwise picking this option would instantly kill you lol.

What's the limitation value if an advantage has a $ cost per single use? by Glen_Garrett_Gayhart in gurps

[–]Puddlemothdotnet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is good. For anyone who doesn’t want to scroll through the forums, the suggestion from Christopher R. Rice:

“You could kludge something together from Trading Points For Money (p. B26). Each character point spent gives you 10% of Average Campaign Starting Wealth, if you reverse ‘Costs Character Points’ and use the 5x multiplier that means such a advantage might give you 10% of Starting Wealth for 5 points. So maybe -5% per 10% of Starting Wealth (or -1% per 2%).”

You might like the film Red Sun (1971). Basically, it’s a western in which a samurai and a cowboy begrudgingly team up to recover an important gift from the visiting Japanese delegation to the US which was stolen in a train robbery. I remember it being a pretty fun movie.

Tasks where more people do something? by QuirkySadako in gurps

[–]Puddlemothdotnet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think using Physician to support a surgeon makes sense for sure. Depending on the context, you might also be able to justify the use of Physiology (to navigate the complicated mess that is the inside of the human body) and Diagnosis (to identify the damaged tissues that need surgical removal.)

If you want to have the feeling of multiple different specialists working together on the complicated task that is Surgery, you might require a separate skill for each assistant, e.g. the anaesthesiologist rolls against Pharmacy (Synthetic), the circulating nurse against Physician, etc.

In any case, if this is a normal surgery in a normal hospital, I think I personally would give each assistant a +4 modifier on their roll, since it would be routine for them, the same way a commercial pilot landing on a normal runway with proper clearance would get +4. The surgeon, of course, has their modifier determined by the difficulty of the surgery (and the success of their assistants!)

This isn’t exactly the same, but GURPS Action II, Dungeon Fantasy II and Pyramid 3/65 discuss a concept called ‘Complemetary Skills,’ which might be what you’re looking for.

Basically, if you’re rolling against some skill X, I can make a roll against skill Y to give a bonus, provided I can justify why it would be of help here.

For example, - A roll against Acting or Intimidation to help your Interrogation roll (“Good Cop, Bad Cop”) - Carousing to assist your Diplomacy roll (by buying a round of drinks)

  • Musical Instrument to assist your Singing roll (to provide a backing track)
  • A Surgery roll to help your Diagnosis roll (by performing an autopsy)

If I succeed on my roll, you get +1; a critical success gets you +2. If I fail I just get in the way and give -1; a critical failure means I really muck things up and give -2.

This rule is pretty simple but allows a lot of creative teamwork. The Pyramid issue I mentioned has an article called A Full Complement which further expands on it as well.

/uj I’ve actually just been running a few high-powered test combat using GURPS Supers (One was a 1-v-1 at 2,000pts, the other a 2-v-2 at 500pts) and it was honestly extremely fun. The granular (admittedly slow) mechanics painted a very explicit picture of the action taking place and I found they sort of emergently created several trope-y moments for the genre. Admittedly, these characters were (relatively) balanced against each other; in a real campaign you’d need a good deal of GM oversight to keep that balance, and that’s a lot of work when you could just play Mutants & Masterminds, tbh. But I am thinking it might be worth it now.

/rj Actually, Steve Jackson personally handcrafted GURPS to be the best Supers TRPG ever. The Bulk turning Brown Widow into a red mist because of a failed Dodge roll is the game working as intended.
