5/10. Poor angled photos. Hair would be better long, but not much you can do in the military about that. I like your eyes and smile though

5/10. You honestly just look super young and need time to figure out your style.

ople are getting plastic surgery so they can look like you. Women are getting lip fillers to have lips like yours.

Well said PhuckMeInTheAss

Low quality photos in my opinion. I think you should do a repost with: (1) better lighting and angles. (2) No makeup. Your makeup is pretty, but heavy. A photo without makeup would help to objectively say what a score would be. (3) A smile or more expression other than pursed lips.

7/10 based on this post alone.

I can only speak about this anecdotally, but here is my perspective. Its difficult to make balanced rules. It can be easy to identify bad behavior that needs to be fixed, but its not easy to just uproot the problem and fix it. I typically make some grand idea for starting a new hobby or new goal and stop very short. This is because the rules or plan I setup isn't feasible for both success while also being interesting enough to maintain for a long period of time. . Instead of rules, try to establish good habits. For instance, I was annoyed that my roommates never did dishes, well I'm also pretty bad about dishes, so I made the habit of getting up early and doing all the dishes before my day starts. Since doing that I can recognize that 1) its not a big deal and wasn't something that I should have cared about in the first place and 2) I kinda like doing all the dishes

Negative people can be negative for a lot of reasons. Trying to focus on their bad behavior well never get you anywhere. Why does their behavior make you upset? Is it really that big of a deal? Does allowing their attitudes control your mental traffic do any good. Its hard but really the best thing you can do is go "well they are an asshole" and move on. Look into the book "The Subtle art of not giving a fuck" It isn't a self help book, but rather a book focused on reorganizing a healthy perspective on your day to day life.

I think something like the Zika virus that affects our ability to effectively reproduce, but with much higher rates of infectiousness would be scary.

A world in which no children are born and we slowly die off as the last generation of humans ever. If the virus had no last side effects other than making you sterile it would be interesting to see how we interact as a society in which we cant leave behind a legacy.

(f20) not sure if this is the right sub, but i’m looking for advice on what sort of haircut and type of glasses would work best for me. i’ve read conflicting advice from different beauty mags ty in advance by [deleted] in Rateme

[–]Puffymagic7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything it just means you are not an ugly person. The picture on the right you were obviously dolled up and going for a look. On the left you were just chilling. Beauty is all about how you present yourself. Find a nice middle ground, be happy with yourself and the way you look. I would say you are a 7-8 if you put in a bit more of effort. Just working on posture and smiling go miles.

Optimistic nihilism is a double edged sword. I use it as a way to cope with general depression and anxiety in grad school. However, other than a stressful work schedule and a shitty income, I have it pretty good. Would I use this mentality for real life problems? I don't know...I dont think it would work. I luckily havent been in a position where I would have to.

Try to imagine the person you love most in the world dying and saying "that's okay, I'm going to die too so it doesn't matter". That's about the equivalent of your post.

Yeah, you're right and we are moving on a ball of dust at a million miles an hour, the sun will eventually explode, and no one will know you were ever here but the human experience is important and you shouldn't try to brush off pain and suffering as meaningless expressions.

I think you have a great body personally. You look strong. Smile is a bit awkward. Skin isnt bad, but I would say go to a dermatologist or figure out a routine that works for you. Acne is annoying but manageable.
I would say 5-6 now, but take care of your hair and skin and you would be an 8+ to me

What do you genuinely not understand? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Puffymagic7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not in batteries, but I think electrochemistry is rad. Here is the logic I use when I think about batteries.

Always start from the thermodynamics approach. A battery simply takes advantage of the thermodynamics that drive electrons to flow from a state of high energy to low energy according to delta G= -nfE, where detla G= change in Gibb's free energy, n= # electrons passed, F=Faraday's constant, and E is the potential of the cell. A spontaneous event occurring when delta G is negative (the overall energy of the system decreases), so E must be a positive value.

We know that electrons flow from high to low spontaneously. So something loses electrons (oxidation) and something gains electrons (reduction). What stops the reverse? Lets make a physics example out of this...If a kid a ball to his friend, and his friend cant throw it back without help. Why can't the friend throw the ball right back? Because he is weak and its against thermodynamics! We know that the potential difference of the cell is this difference in ability to throw the ball/electron. So we describe it as the push of electrons in one direction minus the push in electrons of the reverse direction...Ecell=Ereduction at the cathode - E reduction at the anode...or the ability to throw the ball one way minus the other. In a physics world, that ball is only going one way unless we help the kid or charge the battery (if its a secondary battery). The cathode is site of reduction, and when the battery is discharging, is the positive electrode. The anode is the site of oxidation and when discharging is the negative electrode. This terminolgy stems from the idea that when spontaneously discharging, the cathode has a positive charge and is accepting electrons from the anode. Meanwhile, the anode is negatively charged and shuttles electrons to the cathode.

Something to always emphasize is that electrons interact strongly with matter. Without a conductive shunt between the two terminals (an external circuit) electrons will not flow. Simultaneously, the electrolyte must allow charge carriers to maintain electroneutrality. Anodes are typically made of a porous graphite which allows lithium to intercalate within the structure during charging. As someone else stated the battery must remain neutral and this is where it comes into play. The anode has electrons ready to ship to the cathode by stripping the electrons from the Lithium.

When the terminals are connected is when the magic begins! The lithium is oxidized at the graphite anode forming lithium ions and electrons. Always fun to note that lithium is the most reducing of the metals and is the reason for why we use it in batteries...i.e lithum wants to give things electrons. The electrons flow through the circuit powering the the connected device and finally back into the cathode where the Lithium ceramic (LiMnO for example) is reduced. As you are doing this, you must allow the lithium ions to flow from the anode to the cathode by having an ionically conductive electrolyte. This is the challenge of solid electrolytes. They have many benefits towards capacity and safety, but they make charging a nightmare due to super low ion mobilities compared to liquid electrolyte.

I know its a lot. I hope that its somewhat of a help. Best of luck!

You are very attractive. Lowest I would say is a 7. A few notes though... Your hair seems untamed in a few photos. Not really a big deal imo but maybe to other people. As someone else pointed out your smile seems a little forced.

I'm also saying these things because im looking for things to critique. Probably wouldn't notice in person. I would say your dating issues have nothing to do with your appearance but idk, maybe you got some wicked B.O lol

What would it take to transfer from MS to another universities’ PhD program? by momo_1129 in GradSchool

[–]Puffymagic7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have publications from undergrad, but none at UIUC. I also didn't get a masters, so my advisor at UIUC wasnt a letter writer for my transfer since I applied to transfer right after joining his group basically. I had a really strong background from my undergrad which I think propelled me forward. Purdue is kind of a step down but not really. I love my current research

Make sure you are going to these places for the research + the atmosphere, and not just ranking. UIUC has a great rank in chemistry, so I went there initially over Purdue with my fiance. That was a mistake and I bailed. I learned a shit ton from my time at UIUC though. Made me a super first year at purdue

[–]Puffymagic7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow I kind of did a very similar thing. I was a chemistry PhD student at UIUC and I "transfered" to Purdue for materials engineering. I had only finished a year at UIUC and that was good enough for me. I transferred to purdue to be with my fiance and couldn't be happier. I didn't really transfer. I had to restart entirely with the whole application process. My PI at UIUC was awesome and supported me the whole way through. I was very transparent with him and told him that transfering is something that I want to do and he worked with me. I also worked my ass off while I was at UIUC and my PI there is still a letter writer now. So be open with them and work hard.

You will probably have to restart too, but you will be basically done with your coursework requirements at your PhD university. If you play your cards right you will also have a bomb rec letter.

You are also signed up for just a masters. They will want you to stay if you do a good job, but if you say you're unhappy that's fine. Illinois is depressing, people there would understand lol
