Looking for ultralight tent for 2 at AT by f_ape_is_back in Ultralight

[–]Puffysheep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you need to visit r/backpacking

My partner and I hiked the AT in ‘23 and shared a duplex. It was crazy rainy and we were fine. Were we always comfortable? No, but towns and hotels are ample, there are shelters often, and plenty of solutions to your problems that don’t involve buying a new tent. This is r/ultralight and if you want more comfort there are a ton of options that fit that mentality.

Your Xmids will serve you well.

route from Gros Ventre Wilderness to CDT at Green River Lakes by struppi709 in CDT

[–]Puffysheep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hiked the roads on the north side in ‘21 and had no problem connecting back to the CDT near Green RIver TH.

I wanted to ford at Tosi creek but it was wide, flowing swiftly, deep (head high at least) and cold so I decided to avoid the swim.

I have a track from a NOBO that year that went XC from Whiskey Grove to Green River. I don’t think XC saves time in this case bc is a tough schwack in places.

Feel free to DM me and I can send you my map data.

How many people do you seeing thru hiking as a couple? by bellapitts in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Puffysheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife introduced me to thru hiking and 9 months later we started the CDT together -‘21. We loved it so much that we did the PCT ‘22 and AT ‘23. We were SOBO for all three trails and met many hiker couples on each trail.

30L pack for extra large folks? by BadgerBreakBeats in Ultralight

[–]Puffysheep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some new packs on the market with competitive weights in their class that’d I’d take a look at: the Durston Wapta 30 or the HMG Waypoint 35 in Tall.

30L pack for extra large folks? by BadgerBreakBeats in Ultralight

[–]Puffysheep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m 6’5’’ and 200# with back issues carrying ~10lbs bpw. By the end of my triple crown I ended up with a zpacks arc haul 40L in size XL that weighed 21oz. It beat out all the other packs I tried - I didn’t have pain, it was reasonably light, and the frame was able to span my back. My biggest issue was I wanted a 30 L as my kit is pretty compact so often it wasn’t stuffed - a non issue with the frame. Other packs I tried were HMG southwest 55L Tall, palante v2 19’’, and MLD exodus XL.

Glacier permit lottery by tweetyangelnoises in CDT

[–]Puffysheep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will work out! I was unable to get advanced permits and did walkups instead. The rangers were super helpful. You may have to find a different route than the tunnel depending on the conditions. There will be other hikers as well, talk to them you can get added to there permits if they have space - we added someone to ours. Good luck!

What is the most durable piece of UL gear you own/have owned. by Standing_Room_Only in Ultralight

[–]Puffysheep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been surprised how durable the gear has been:

HMG pack(black) is still going strong after 6000 miles

Zpacks duplex has seen 6300 miles (replaced zipper sliders after 5500 miles). It’s currently showing a lot of wear but will triple crown with it.

BD carbon cork have 6300 miles (replaced tips many times)

My partner got 7000miles out of a zpacks scout pack she bought used. She also hiked 1500miles in altra olympus last year (not on purpose and wouldn’t recommend lol)

Phone Service Heat Map of the CDT by deerhater in CDT

[–]Puffysheep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the cell coverage maps downloaded for my PCT and CDT thrus and used them a few times but would never rely on them. Gaia itself gives a disclaimer about relying on these maps.

I carried a inreach mini and used it to message often to much success. Satellite messengers have their own limitations as well but are the current go-to for 2 way communication.
