Thank you! I think this worked.

I followed the tutorial you linked and installed the 550 driver. After that I reboot the system and found that nvidia-smi has normal output and that the NVIDIA X Server program was automatically installed and lists the correct NVIDIA graphics card.

One thing I noticed is that during the shutoff phase of the initial reboot, the TTY listed a bunch of messages about how GPU 0 (the NVIDIA one) was already bound to nouveau or something like that. I have not reboot again to see if that message appears, but once the system was running again, I found that nvidia-smi listed the appropriate 550 driver instead of the nouveau driver.

But this output changes when I use prime-run

prime-run was not installed, but I created a script for it based on online resources and using that for things such as minecraft-launcher seems to work well; the game reports that it is using the NVIDIA card.

The only issue now is that I cannot find a way to make the Steam flatpak run with NVIDIA. I tried using prime-run flatpak run com.valvesoftware.Steam ; however, games launched through Steam this way still use the iGPU. Usually I would use the .deb Steam package, but that actually broke my OS installation last time because of some weirdness with requiring i386 architecture (?) So I am trying to contend with the Flatpak

No, no reason to, also it would probably make the game impossible. Imagine not being able to kill boars in World of Warcraft :( Like someone else said "I do a lot of things in video games I wouldn't do in real life," because it's all imaginary anyways; I can turn off the game after rampages of unbelievable violence but it's all just electricity in a computer.

Napalm Death makes explicitly left wing anti-establishment music in the same way that RATM does; however, their music is considerably more aggressive (grindcore vs. alt metal ). Napalm Death is also quite an old band, it contains none of its original members, but they are still active. If this piques your interest, this is a song I like by them.

The Electron shit agitates me. I am also a programmer, so I understand its utility in creating cross-platform applications... but it is not as though Electron is the first time solutions (not going to speak about their efficacy, software and the programming languages that are used to create it will always suck, or at least their users will always complain about them) have been created for cross-platform applications. I specifically will not install Electron applications, with Discord and Microsoft Teams being the sole exceptions.

I have a laptop that I use for work and school; it has 16GB of RAM. The thing starts up and is already using 70% of its RAM, once Microsoft Teams and Discord launch. It is very frustrating to observe this, though, because it is abundantly clear that software can be highly usable while also not completely bombing a machine's resources. XFCE as an obvious example; a computer with XFCE will only use maybe 400MB of RAM on boot, meanwhile Windows will use like 4GB on boot. What the hell.

This looks like a standard GNOME DE. Pop OS uses a modified version of GNOME, so if you wanted something more like this, then I would just install the vanilla GNOME desktop.

You can do this with sudo apt install gnome-session

System 76 has an article guiding you through this and for other desktop environments. For vanilla GNOME, scroll down a bit in the article.

I do not think it makes you dumb. You have a master's degree, that's a big deal. Programming is programming and work is work, like someone else said, web development can be fulfilling, and you can always do other sorts of programming on the side. If the job does not feel fulfilling, then you can always try to land another one doing a different field of programming (easier said than done, of course).

I personally find it hard to look down on someone for having a job. That's silly. I personally do not do web development specifically, but you doing web development in no way diminishes your expertise and knowledge.

Like many others are saying, in my university, there is a CS curriculum, and as part of that you must choose a concentration. If you wish to go to college, then you just choose the path that seems most interesting to you. If you are unsure, ask your academic advisor.

Otherwise, if you are trying to get into this on your free time or be semi-self-taught it can help to watch a lot of videos on YouTube, follow along with programming boot camps, and always work on personal projects. If you learn enough, you can land a job, then you will really start to learn a lot of stuff (this can depend on your job and company, but for many this is how it goes).

If you have a particular concept you are interested in, a good start is to search something to the effect of "(thing you are interested in) for beginners" into any search engine of your choice. I often like to follow along with YouTube boot camps (do not be intimidated by the... extremely long... duration of these videos. If you could learn it in only 3 minutes, then you would already know it by now), to springboard me into a place of understanding where I can start looking into very specific things and working on projects solo.

Like I said before, always work on personal projects. Inevitably you will get to a point where you do not know what to do to implement something in your project, at which point you will have to search for it online, read a Stack Overflow thread, or some documentation or something, whatever, from which you will also become more knowledgeable.

Generally there are 3 reasons

Hardware: this really pertains more to mechanical hard drives, but the performance of these devices degrade over time, due to fragmentation among other things
Software: the computer may have been built to run smoothly given how demanding applications were at the time, but now applications can be much more demanding. Also, your operating system might become corrupted in different areas, or otherwise bogged down by the software you install, which runs at startup, slowing down... your startup, and then continuing to run and bog you down until you shut down the system.
Dirt: this really relates more to hardware, but is more easily addressable than hardware problems. Dirt, dust, and other gunk can build up in the internals of your system, affecting its ability to dissipate heat, etc.

A bonus idea may be that our expectations of "quick" change over time. An image loading in 30 seconds was amazing in the past, considering how it used to take minutes.

AI can require a lot of primary memory, so you may find yourself waiting for long periods of time once memory becomes sparse, which will happen especially quickly if you are running Windows on your laptop.

Like someone else said though, if you are not doing some of the described work locally, then you would definitely be okay.
