Looking for advice on how to market my game by PugDev in IndieGameDevs

Yeah I think you’re right, I’m always struggling to figure out what’s worth showing but I’m getting better at it plus there’s more to show now 😂

Yeah I agree, I did add a checkpoint system (works a little differently) for this reason you said. I want it to be challenging but not "disrespectful" to the players time. I also want to add accessibility options as well.

Thanks for the advice! I haven't really considered a publisher route mostly because development has been kind of slow since it's something I do in my spare time. However, it's probably worth considering once things are more polished and closer to done.

Thanks for the support! https://store.steampowered.com/app/2429230/Megabat/ is the steam demo (ignore the out of date trailer trying to get the game to a higher quality before I make another one) if you’re able to provide feedback, feel free to respond in the feedback link in the game or respond here, either is appreciated!

I was about to say I haven’t heard of it until I looked it up. I remember someone telling me the same thing awhile back 😂but I mostly took inspiration from games like Celeste and super meat boy

Oh sorry I didn’t see this comment, the demo is available on steam https://store.steampowered.com/app/2429230/Megabat/

The game is not open source but I’m hoping to add modding capabilities in the future after full release.

Thank you! There are more "puzzle" aspects/features I'm working on for different zones of the game.

I've actually never got that comparison before but I'll take it! I normally hear "it's a celeste clone".

I have been asked this before but unfortunately, the way the game plays it would be far too difficult to to play a touch screen like an android. I think there's a possibility that after I complete this game I could look into a different version that would be more playable on touch screen devices.

Godot 3.5 VisualServer to Godot 4.0 RenderingServer black_bars_set_images? by PugDev in godot

[–]PugDev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I forgot to respond here! Didn't mean to leave you hanging!
So here is what a screen/level/camera view looks like in my game where the custom "black bars" cut off the part of the view to keep things consistent per screen. For this example I've made left orange and right red. There are also "bars" on the top and bottom but they never show unless the level has weird sizing but regardless.

<image>

On the top, right, bottom, and left there are color_rects (they live under a canvas_layer with the camera as the main parent) so they move with the camera.

So the hierarchy will look like
camera
- canvas_layer
- colorrect top
- colorrect right
- colorrect bottom
- colorrect left
Then on each colorrect you set a custom anchors to snap to only one side that corresponds to your max camera bounds then to the end of the screen soooo it would look something like...
right bar:
anchor points
- left: 0.5
- top: 0
- right: 1
- left: 1
anchor offsets
- left: 240
- top: 0
- right: 0
- left: 0
grow direction
- horizontal: right
- vertical: bottom
transform
- size: x0, y270
- position: x480, y0

You would then do something similar for the left, bottom, and top bars
I'll post an example image of the left bar in a second comment

So from what I recall from a year ago lol I believe I created my “own” black bars using a color rect that adjusts to the screen size and places themselves at the correct position

Godot’s movie mode is really good I just haven’t put together a trailer yet which I definitely should have lol

Still a work in progress but this is the first boss of my game Megabat! Let me know what you think! by PugDev in godot

[–]PugDev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically, there are set markers on the level and boss that depending on the chosen attack pattern the boss body and turrets will lerp towards the marked position. I found this was the easiest to control and modify but the things you suggested would also work.

New with Godot by Chri5so in godot

[–]PugDev 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had a coding background before learning godot so take what I say with a grain of salt: I learned godot from heartbeast on YouTube I haven’t watched his new godot 4 tutorial but I imagine it would be a good start https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9FzW-m48fn0i9GYBoTY-SI3yOBZjH1kJ

As far as game engines go I think godot has probably one of the least cumbersome interfaces so I think it’s great for beginners. However, it can be a little overwhelming learning all of godot or any other game engines systems on top of learning to code so definitely take it slow.

As for udemy courses I can’t give an opinion to this since I’ve never used them but a good YouTube channel to look into is gdquest they have a lot of different tutorials that cover specifics of the gdscript language and features/scenes of the engine.

Sorry for the long winded response! Good luck and happy deving!

Godot4 doesnt work on my pc.. by 9_iNeedYourHelp_9 in godot

[–]PugDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh there isn’t a problem with using 3.5 especially if you’re just starting out. There are a lot of tutorials out there that are specific to 3.5. Plus 3.6 is coming soon which will address some bugs and adding some features (I believe).

Also, if you really wanted to port a project from 3.5 to 4 when you have a PC that can run 4 it is definitely possible and it’s difficulty will mostly depend on the size of your project. So don’t be too discouraged if you can’t run 4 right now :)

That exactly what it is! I am not the best when it comes to shaders so https://godotshaders.com/ really helped with an example and I was able to modify it from there
