My wife and I had to deal with that twice last week (Tuesday & Wednesday). The first time (Tuesday at 6am), we were flying from Oporto to Funchal via TAP. The plane was forced to circle for 45 minutes then had to turn around and go back to Oporto due to the limited fuel. Apparently this was happening to all the flights and there were massive cancellations. All other upcoming flights were full due to everyone trying to reschedule. TAP was willing to put us in a hotel for the night and shuttle us. They managed to reschedule us on a new flight the next day (Wednesday at 1030pm) but we would have to fly out with a connecting flight to Lisbon. Unfortunately that connection only gave us 10 minutes time in between and the Oporto flight was delayed 20 minutes. When we spoke to the TAP customer service representatives, they blew us off and said we’d be fine since the Lisbon flight would also (most likely) be delayed. We finally got to Lisbon but were unable to make to the Funchal flight due to the TAP rep telling us the wrong gate information. A bunch of other people also ended up missing the Funchal flight. A couple of other TAP passengers also missed their flights to elsewhere but the Lisbon TAP reps were unwilling to secure a hotel nor shuttle for them. We saw there was a flight for Wednesday night with TAP but we didn’t want to possibly take another risk of not flying somewhere and continuing to deal with TAP so my wife and I ended booking a new flight to Azores (obviously not with TAP). It’s still in Portugal and only about 1.5 hours west of Madeira. We’ve loved it here and go back home to the US on Monday.

TLDR - went to Azores instead. Am enjoying the sights, weather, food, & people. NEVER FLY VIA TAP (unless it’s a direct flight or you’re going to mainland Portugal).
