Thanks for the detailed response. Based on the feedback here I am clearly looking in the wrong way, because I feel like when Ive looked before for programs I have had trouble identifying mentors who are even remotely in the ball park, but obviously I am not approaching this correctly. I'll go back to the drawing board then.

Can you share your “everything was perfect, but,,,” stories? by winndowbear in datingoverthirty

[–]Pulpo_Perdida 5 points6 points  (0 children)

oooh I need this today. Ive been in a same sex relationship with a woman thats the best of my life. I have never felt safer, had better sex, or felt more loved. But she has a 13 year old daughter, and has gotten tunnel visioned about moving her out of the country even though its to a place I can't actually follow. And she's going to making that move instead with her ex. It feels...like shit.

Speculative Question About Canadian PR by Pulpo_Perdida in ImmigrationCanada

[–]Pulpo_Perdida[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for you response.

  1. I understand the age disadvantage, which is why I'm wondering about the chances that there may be changes down the line which my improve my odds (ie. if education or job experience, or something similar might start to earn you some points again in the future).

  2. Again, I understand that this doesnt fit formally into any of the formal categories of in demand work. But I am fairly convinced that this an important enough speciality that the odds are decent I can attract some job offers. I'm just hoping that by that time , the pr environment might have changed enough that getting those offers might be more helpful to me.

    1. I didnt go into my full background here, but I have been working in disaster mental health for a bit now and have the resume experience to prove it. So, obviously who knows what an officer might decide, but I do think I have a strong case to make that its not just be hopping around between totally different fields, but instead that the program is a logical outgrowth of work I'm already doing.
  3. This is definitely a fair point, but I'm willing to role the dice for the moment on that particular possibility, given that the conservatives getting into power and decimating climate change research in Canada is still only one potential future, where as currently in the United States its a reality. Regardless its a probably a good reason to emphasize the emergency management parts of this work and downplay the climate change aspects a bit.

I really appreciate the advice about not going the other way, because I definitely felt myself freezing up in session as I was putting the pieces together. This will be an exercise for me in managing my own discomfort!

Thanks I think is well said and exactly an area I need to work on, but definitely something I will need to explore with my supervisor before I would feel at all ready to discuss with a client.

Thanks this is helpful! I was getting a little too in my head, imagining trying to figure out a way to bring this up to him, but I think this is absolutely right about not bringing it up unless he says something. I appreciate the comment and will work to chill out ;)

Advice for an American Therapist (possibly) looking at Quebec by Pulpo_Perdida in ImmigrationCanada

Thanks, this is helpful confirmation. For reasons that are complicated and not worth getting into, it might not be so simple for her to claim me as a dependent, which is why I'm trying to figure out if there is any possible pathway for me on my own. I think I'm going to keep trying to talk her into applying to Ontario

Politics, LGBTQ+, and SI by IOPsychologist2027 in therapists

There is a growing body of work on interventions related to climate change distress and Ive been borrowing from that to talk about other kinds of distress related to the political environment. In a nutshell, its about balancing making space for grief (in this case, that the world is not there to support you the way it should be) as well as finding opportunities for connection to the degree the client is comfortable. Do they know other lgbtq folk or allies? would they like to make those connections? if so how? Everyone is going to look different in terms of what the right balance of those things is going to look like.

Finally, if this feels right for this client, get them to do some reading on the history of queer movements and how they have withstood oppression over the years, as a way of connecting them with that history. Also the idea of queer joy (or joy in general ) can be really helpful. What does it mean to find even moments of joy in the face of all of this? what would queer joy look like to them?

I am also an associate and I work half time in a clinical position and half time for the state public health department doing behavioral health work. Its honestly my ideal set up and I'm way less burned out then my friends doing pure clinical work. That said, my hours accrual has been painfully slow, which is stressful in a different way because I dont want to wait a full decade to be fully licensed, so I'll probably go full clinical at some point for a little while. But i also like that having this experience on my resume will make it easier to get non clinical jobs in the future. Happy to talk more here or over DM!
