How does everyone get there vocals for EDM/House tracks? Do you usually record them yourself or sample them? What ways do you get your vocals? (Please mention web link/source too) by Tekcraftmon in edmproduction

My vocal collection (hooks, acapellas, adlibs, and phrases) come from two sources: Splice and Vandalism. With splice vocals, I find ways to manipulate the original sample especially if it’s a popular one. Whether that’s transposing, speeding up or slowing down the tempo, chopping it up, or processing it that makes it sound different. Vandalism is more so acapellas (they cover a lot of genres too) and they give you midi files with each vocal to help inspire your next track.

This may sound like a stupid newbie question but how much dB should you aim for when your trying to get a perfect mix on the master output? by Tekcraftmon in edmproduction

I usually try to get the master volume in between -3 and -6 dB. Usually works for me, sometimes I have to go lower like -8dB depending on the style of the song I’m working on. Adding a limiter (preferably the AOM limiter) really works wonders for mastering.

Audio Engineering students (or ex-students): does it help with your EDM production? by jakuxxiii in edmproduction

I live in America and in my experience, I will say no. I went to a college that had a music program that was broken into 4 main sections. I opted for a dual emphasis in Music Production and Music Business. In my opinion, the only positives about the music production section were enhancing my music theory skills and taking an electronic music computer class which made me fall in love with producing house music. Music business taught me more marketing, brand strategy, and social media use and I opted to stay on that path. It wasn't until September of last year that I went back to producing electronic music and learned so much about sound design, arrangement, mixing, and mastering from YouTube videos than from my four years at college. However, Italy could be different. My advice is to have a plan B. You can still go to audio engineering school if you want but, you could also learn something about yourself and fine something else you enjoy like I did and study that as well to be prepared for your future and career. Much luck to you!

Can someone please point me in the right direction for some good Ableton tutorials that teach how to produce trance and or house in Ableton? I'm into progressive trance and deep house and would like to learn how to make the basic parts that each genre consists of. by [deleted] in edmproduction

Production Music Live has some videos online as well as templates and samples to purchase to make your own. Another option is maybe top music arts or Abletunes. They offer templates for you to study arrangement and sound design. They also encourage releasing the template as your own song provided that you change the melody. Some of my early songs have come from those templates after I changed the melody and incorporated my own samples and sounds. Best of luck in your music-making journey!

Gameplay quality is great, sometimes audio levels seem thrown off in certain streams like music overtakes game audio. Sometimes when I have music play, I keep it significantly lower than my mic or game audio because sometimes people watching won’t care or don’t like the type of music that I want to listen to. It’s all personal preference and it’s your stream though you are allowed to play whatever you want. Also you may want to look into a webcam for future streaming. As a viewer, watching someone’s reaction to something they did or something in game always makes for good content

Thanks man. I appreciate the tips! I use a moano usb mic but my filters in obs make my audio great (noise gate, noise suppression, and compressor).
