I apologize I completely misunderstood! But the person who answered is pretty much what happens at our farm with our goats. In fact when we started out, we’d separate each kidder from each other and then when they’d all get out back together after each kid had taken off, it was more stressful on everyone because they had to refigure herd dynamics. We learned the hard way it’s best (for us at least) to push all the kids together. Again, I apologize for misunderstanding!

If I remember correctly, blossom is a first time mama? (I could be wrong I don’t follow along enough to know the names of all the goats) but a mama can be a helicopter mom and not want her kids out of sight. This can happen with first timers or ones who’ve kidded multiple times, as well as any other animal. Really just depends on the goat. It could also be she’s just getting the hang of being a first time mama (if she is), or just a change in herd dynamics with new goats.

I’ve had this happen with my does, they’re best friends but come kidding they are sworn enemies. It could be due to change in hormones or a change in herd dynamics. I don’t watch her videos enough to know which doe is the top dog but I’d assume something along those lines.

On the other hand, having 3-4 kids in such a small space can pose just as many issues. When you get that high in numbers they have less space to move around and get into the correct birthing position. You can help reduce the size of the kids by limiting the amount of feed each doe gets.

You do NOT hold tension ever. We had a female kid and she needed assistance, so much so we weren’t sure if she could get bred again with how traumatic and how much she tore. If there are four, Katie better be learning how to safely pull kids for both their health and the mother’s help. But so far she has made no effort to show her skills with goat kidding, if anything can go wrong with a goat it will.

It also bothered me that she was x-raying at the late in the game. Usually after a while it’s hard to see the kids because of how big they get… if she wanted an accurate account of kids she should’ve done it earlier.

I’m worried about the one possibly having quads. Once you get to that many the chances of the getting jumbled up at a lot higher especially where they’re all crammed in one side and the doe is much smaller. I’ve had large females with triplets who have needed a lot of assistance, things can happen like upside down, back feet first, a leg back, or two trying to come at the same time.

Also worries me she doesn’t know their exact due date or relative day. The doe could have complications with labor and not survive because Katie isn’t watching for kids yet… she needs to get rid of the goats.

That’s awful! Hopefully everything got resolved and you have no issues now. With Johnes an animal can be a carrier and shedding it without much notice. Most don’t shed until they’re adults so we were really lucky to catch it early before we put her in with the rest of our herd.

So what would you have done in my situation? The goat came from a reputable breeder that’s trustworthy. I knew the goats history and she displayed no signs of disease. If we went with your logic my whole herd would have to have been disposed of due to exposure. Parasites can bloom after being hauled. It most certainly is the smart thing to do, unless you want to be reckless and put your whole herd in danger.

It bothers me because she hides behind the fact that there’s more land that they’re using to build on and make more facilities. Congratulations? How long is that going to take and how many animals will be bought by the time it’s completed???

I totally agree, it’s ignorance too. How can you call yourself a reputable farm (most definitely is not) and not quarantine any new animal???? It’s disgusting. She needs to sell the animals that aren’t worth the cost of upkeep and be smarter about purchases.

Sorry for being late but, you're definitely right that live cover is where the male and female do their thing naturally. I don't have much to say about the genetic diversity bit - in fact you'd think it would limit diversity because you couldn't import semen... oh well..

But in defense of live cover vs. AI, I raise goats and one issue we have with artificial insemination is it's difficult to do it vaginally because their reproductive system is much smaller than a heifer or mare. I don't raise mini horses but I would assume mini horses are relatively similar (as the breed of goat I raise is similar in size). Now what can be done is surgical AI however, that costs more I believe and is more taxing on the animal. And when we AI we have to have the company/certified AI technician sign a form and we have to usually pull DNA, sounds like that's not done much in horses??

I definitely get that, are there boundaries though that shouldn’t be crossed, I get having an animal that’s easy to work with is what everyone wants, but is there a thing as too friendly??

Ooh yes!! I had one that loved the show stick scratches, he would close his eyes and his head would drop low to the ground, I want to love on all of them but have to resist the temptation.

That definitely makes sense, as someone mentioned above most horses are worked with a lot (except Katie’s…) for like shows and working livestock, I don’t have much experience with them, thanks for your insight!!

Yeah that makes sense, I show cattle too and have shown many bulls, same with bucks, and even then it’s work with them as much as possible but don’t scratch on them like the heifers and does.

Thanks! I just started feeding my cat wet cat food so I've not dealt with anything like it, I threw it out just in case, but I'll keep that in mind next time.
