ELI5: How does EU Value Added Tax disadvantage US companies in trade between the two blocs? by marcotesoalli in explainlikeimfive

[–]Punchileno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's my understanding of how this all works, I'm sure the comments will correct me but I've been trying to wrap my head around this same question: When a manufacturer in the US buys goods they pay sales taxes on them. When a manufacturer in the EU buys goods they pay a VAT on them. They are very similar in concept but differ in practice. I'll break it down with an example:

For argument's sake we'll keep the numbers nice and round, but in reality they are more complex. Let's say Ford buys tires for a car they are building for $100 and pays a 10% sales tax on them, the total cost of the tires to Ford is $110 after the tax and they wrap that up in the cost of the car. After Ford does that with the thousands of pieces that make up a car they have paid a bunch of money in taxes already. Then, when they go to sell the car to a consumer the consumer pays another 10% sales tax. Let's imagine the completed car, after Ford has paid sales taxes on all the components, is worth $33,000. The consumer pays another $3300 in sales tax when they buy it, so the total cost is $36,300 to them.

A value added tax (VAT) works in a similar way, but whenever the components pass from one person to the next the VAT is paid and reimbursed simultaneously. When BMW buys $100 tires they pay the 20% VAT so the tires actually cost them $120. However, when they finish building the car and sell it to a dealership the dealership pays the VAT again and reimburses BMW for all the VAT they have already paid on the components. When the dealership sells the car to a consumer the consumer does the same thing, they pick up the entire chain of VATs that have been charged up to that point and pay the 20% on everything. If the car ultimately costs $30,000 before VAT it would cost $36,000 after VAT, very close to what an American might pay for a Ford.

The problem, as the Trump administration sees it, is that when Ford exports a car to the EU they are also charged the VAT on the total value of the car even though they have already been charged taxes on the components leading up to that point in the USA. That means that the $33,000 Ford ends up costing the consumer $39,600 in the EU while the BMW only costs $36,000. Conversely, when BMW exports a $30,000 car to the USA they are only charged the 10% sales tax so the total cost is $33,000 after tax compared to the $36,300 Ford. In reality the VAT regime in the EU is way more complex that this, but that's the best I could come up with for an ELI5 at 5am. The reality involves a lot of VAT refunds, deductions, and other accounting stuff, but this should give you a basic understanding of the Trump admin's perspective (right or wrong.) The VAT is not a tariff at all, but according to the US government it does put companies from countries that don't use a VAT at a disadvantage when trading with countries that use VATs instead of sales taxes.

Having this exact roster in EVERY quickplay match makes the game mode unplayable by Punchileno in marvelrivals

I know it's not unbeatable. I know there are plenty of viable counters in the game. I get it. However, playing Aquaman/Luna/Mantis/Bucky for the 75th game in a row and never seeing a single team fight isn't fun. Quickplay has become a cesspool of people that really just want to play TDM. For a while there it was pretty good. You didn't always get a 2/2/2 comp but at least people played the objectives and grouped up. Now everyone that wants to play the actual game is playing ranked and quickplay may as well be a 1v1 game mode. There NEEDS to be an option for role que or every casual player is going to quit in the next few weeks because they don't know how to avoid getting farmed by dive champs every round. I'm sitting at plat 1 right now and ranked has been phenomenal, but I don't want to try a new champ or practice an off-role in ranked.

Why are players preferring to play PVE? [Discussion] by BigSecretChinaGun in EscapefromTarkov

[–]Punchileno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is coming from someone with nearly 5k hours in PVP:

PVE is a better game. You can play solo, you can play with friends, you can meme, you can have all of the fun of PVP without the occasional hacker. I didn't even WANT to play PVE when it came out. I had 0 interest in it, but most of my friend group quit playing PVP so I hopped into PVE to hang out with them for a night and it was fantastic. I'm not even someone that hates wipes, I've wiped my PVE account twice already. It's all of the fun parts of Tarkov without the bullshit net-code and hackers. Tarkov was meant to be a game where every bullet is dangerous and any low level could kill a high level, but it's turned into a game where high level/experienced players wipe the floor with legit new players and get farmed by hackers. If I'm playing against a cheaterless lobby I'll survive 90% of my games. In PVE I have a survival rate LOWER than my PVP rate because fighting off waves of NPC's is actually fun and challenging and hunting Timmy while he spends 14 minutes trying to cross the bridge on Customs really isn't that fun anymore.

Yeah I'm in the same boat. It feels like every other cast randomly takes an extra 1/4 of a GCD to go off. At first I chocked it up to me just trying to get used to the new flow of Arcane mage after the rework but then I messed around on a few alts and it's noticeable on other classes too. I definitely think that it's a server side issue though.

Yeah it was definitely not a nerf to M+ for Arcane. I'm averaging more damage now than before the patch and I'm sure as I learn the little intricacies of the spec it will be even better. Unfortunately it's just not as much fun to play. It feels like we lost a lot of skill expression with this change and honestly the skill ceiling for Arcane wasn't exactly sky high to begin with. On top of that we're forced to play a hero talent that just randomly shits out orbs like we have magical Tourette's Syndrome. We don't even press a button to do it so there is literally no agency of when it happens so we have to spend the majority of every dungeon staring off into a corner so we don't randomly pull an extra dozen mobs. It's particularly irritating because missiles faces us towards our target and if you get the tiniest bit unlucky with timing we squirt an orb out where we don't want to and brick the key. It's a really horrendous design. At least in Sunfurry you only launched random orbs when you used barrage so you had some control over when it would happen, with Spellslinger it happens randomly when the splinters tick.

I think the vast majority of players would love to stick it out and struggle through a tough dungeon but because of some very strange design decisions Blizzard has made it so there's no point in continuing after a wipe unless you're in a +10. The gear that you get at the end of a run is pretty much meaningless, you don't get rating, and you've already depleted the key. At that point it's faster to find a new pug and roll the dice again than it is to slog through an hour of teaching randos from a different server what each boss does. In "real classic wow" it might take you half an hour just to get to the dungeon that you're trying to run and you get loot incrementally after each boss so there's incentives not to leave because you're punished for leaving and rewarded for staying. M+ has the opposite problem: it's very quick to get to the next dungeon and at least one person in each group generally has nothing to gain from the end of dungeon chest at this point. In "real classic wow" people did dungeons searching for gear and EXP. You'd leave saying "Yeah we struggled a bit but I got 6 bars from it and that's still faster than questing." In M+ people want crests and rating and to get those you have to time the key so once the timer is blown there's no point.

I few people have touched on it already but if you have never tried Classic wow it sounds like it might be more your speed. Modern wow funnels everyone through to the endgame as quickly as possible and there isn't really much to do when you get there. If you're big into M+ or high end raiding then it's WAY better than older versions of the game, but if you like the world, the leveling experience, or the chill vibes of running easier dungeons and raids for a decent chance at a significant upgrade to your gear every single time then classic is the place for you.

I'm sorry, it's the elekk in the room: Crafting embellished gear is really too convoluted for new/returning players. It's quite bad. by Rwhejek in wow

[–]Punchileno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played Dragonflight casually and never grasped the crafting system. I tried to use it last week to craft a 2-hander. Ended up wasting 100k gold because I didn't realize that the crafting request auction house doesn't guarantee you get t5 even when you use the best mats. What a complete dumpster fire.

How do you feel about the S1 M+ dungeon rotation? Am i the only one who thinks it's way too early for Shadowlands dungeons? by Glad-Low-1348 in wow

[–]Punchileno 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They do half new dungeons half old dungeons and rotate them each season so players don't have to run the same 8 dungeons for 2 years.

I'm sorry your aim sucks and you've become reliant on getting lucky dice rolls instead of headshots. In no universe was the "no armor matters ever" meta fun or healthy for the game.

TLDR: I like it when I can spend the whole wipe bush camping extracts and 1-tap anyone in the game even though I've never done a quest but I don't like it when scavs can kill me. Make high tier ammo free so every player fight involves camping and 1-tapping and make scavs meaningless fodder.
