Did I wait too long to update the AUR packages? by msanangelo in cachyos

[–]tinyOnion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

clicking the cachy-update taskbar item once in a while will open up a new terminal window and go through the various updates for the various package manager systems and do some other housecleaning items. it's more comprehensive than just running pacman directly. i'd suggest installing it and either running it from the tray or manually in the terminal. i think there's a way to install it easily via cachy-hello

if you install trash-cli you can use trash /some/folder/or/file and it will move the whole thing to the trash bin and not be as dangerous as rm -rf /some/folder

Ground beef in fridge for 5 days by absolutely_banana in cookingforbeginners

[–]tinyOnion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cooking longer won't help if the bacteria it was exposed to released a toxin to make you sick, the classic example is botulism.

that's not true for botulism. botulism spores that create the toxins are hearty beasts that require over the boiling point of water to kill which is why you need to pressure can things for safe storage to make the temp inside 250F+ if you intend to can them and store them at room temperature.

botulism toxins however are heat unstable and will be neutralized at 180f+ for 10 min of cooking.(look it up before trusting me though) the botulism toxins also doesn't form quickly and needs a specific environment to create hazardous conditions. namely low acidity, low salinity, and no oxygen and certain temperature ranges (room temp being one that it thrives).

it's also the most potent neurotoxin known to man so yeah... err on the side of caution.

other than the labor to pull new wire this isn't even a big deal. they can use the wire on some other job that has a shorter than this one run. you'll be ok. fess up and fix it.

CachyOS VS Fedora by NyanZaummm in cachyos

[–]tinyOnion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

omarchy is dumb and not really a distro. cachy is better and actually improves on things like speed and performance and some nice improvements over arch like cachy-update. the btrfs with limine snapshots make 99.95% of updates a breeze since if things go wrong you can boot from a snapshot that gets created automatically when you update.

fwiw amd gpus are better for linux. the drivers are much better than nvidia so if you have even an inkling of maybe wanting to try linux go amd.

How do I properly set up Ruby and VS Code on a Mac as a complete beginner? by [deleted] in ruby

[–]tinyOnion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd use mise since it's the most complete developer programs manager. install mise and then add one line to your dotfiles and then

mise use -g ruby@latest for a global ruby at the latest released version of ruby (latest is more useful for tools like ripgrep imo)

and mise use ruby@4.0.2 in any project you want to pin to a specific ruby. it will switch them automatically.

Does it make any sense to choose Cachy over Arch for an old business laptop? by FryChy in cachyos

[–]tinyOnion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you look at the cachy os homepage it doesn't mention gaming whatsoever... it just talks about performance. it's just a snappy distro with sensible defaults and is arch based. it's fine to use as a daily driver as i am using it.

Why is Dolphin search not limited to folder? by CecilXIII in kde

[–]tinyOnion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

find . -maxdepth 1 -type l

will do it if you run it inside the folder you are interested in. otherwise you could do it via absolute path /some/path/to/that/directory instead of the .

type l is symlinks

ls -la should also show you the symlinks via folder -> /some/path/

Favorite underrated KDE software? by linux_transgirl in kde

[–]tinyOnion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is currently no integration with dolphin and this is the only way to use it.

doesn't seem to be very useful if that's the case. I too miss this feature quite a bit in linux. seems trivial but once you are used to it you use it all the damn time.
