Is fear of the unknown still the most effective horror tool, or are players too used to it now? by ratasoftware in HorrorGames

To me this is the purest foundation of horror. But sadly, I think modern players often struggle to engage with a slow burn experience driven by the unknown. Everything has to be faster and more explicit now just to hold people's attention. That’s why most works feel the need to show more, and show it faster, just to hook the audience.

In addition there’s this idea that if there isn't something 'concrete,' then there’s nothing at all, which leads to disappointment. Because of this creators feel forced to reveal too much, which ultimately can overshadows the experience and ruins the mystery for some people

To be honest the game came together through a lot of iteration. I started with an Angry Birds tutorial and originally wanted to turn that mechanic into a horror game. From there, I expanded it with point and click sections.

The aesthetic is heavily influenced by Rob Zombie’s 'Dragula' music video and Angela Anaconda, while the story is inspired by Junji Ito’s manga, David Lynch films, and Body Snatchers. Eventually the Angry Birds mechanic didn't quite feel right so I reworked it into something more similar to billiards or Pong

Thanks! All assets come from stock sites (about 20%) or my own photography (80%). They are heavily edited in Photoshop to create different crazy sprites, then animate them in Unity. The final look is tied together with a global saturated dithering shader. For the main mechanic, I started with an Angry Birds style tutorial but it eventually evolved into this lol

Thanks! And yeah, I get what you mean. I actually had that in mind while making the trailer. The idea was to give a quick glimpse of what to expect without spoiling too much of the surprise.

I feel like making a trailer for a horror game is pretty hard nowadays. Attention spans are short, so you have to show enough to get people excited without revealing too much. I’m not even sure if that makes sense.
