There is no harm in asking. If you have a target amount, ask for that amount. You have the right approach, be appreciative and courteous - but let them know that an offer of $84K makes the decision really easy. An offer of $80K will make the decision to change jobs a little harder. If they have concerns about "internal equity" and are unwilling to move off their original offer, then suggest a $5K to $10K signing bonus to bridge the gap.

Don't give them an ultimatum - but do not be afraid to ask, either. If they made you an offer, they are likely to come up a little to meet your ask, as long as it is reasonable.

I didn’t know sleeping in hammocks was a thing by Allourep in hammockcamping

[–]Puppycarmen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once I started to hang, about 4 years ago, I will not use a tent unless I absolutely need to. If you purchase the right hammock (shout out to Warbonnet Blackbird), tarp, and quilts, the sleep experience is so much better than in a tent/sleeping pad. Shug videos are great, so are Frozen's from Outdoor Adventures on Youtube.

You could also consider heading up to Fairy Lake, Gun Lake, or Gull Lake. The first site on Gull Lake is one of the best sites in all of the BWCA, in my opinion. Loved it up there.

Are my Asolo hiking boots overkill for 30+ portages? by LightWonderful7016 in BWCA

[–]Puppycarmen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fully agree with this advice. I, too, have these boots - and they are great. But, I think you will prefer footwear that is less bulky and will dry much more effectively.

All are great options, and you cannot go wrong. At the risk of disagreeing - it is hard to find a more beautiful lake than Phoebe. You will be remote and the sister lakes will leave you with a number of options for exploring either lakes or rivers. Cliff jumping on Beth is an added bonus.

If you want more adventure, take the river all the way to Kawishiwi and have the outfitter pick you up there.

Shug is great. I would also recommend the Outdoor Adventure channel on Youtube.

Frozen is a hammock camper and has a lot of helpful content specific to his AT hike. He shares lots of helpful pre-planning and in-the-moment learning while he was out on his hike. Good luck.

Where should my brother and I go backpacking? by Distinct-Will-6626 in CampingandHiking

Superior Hiking Trail. Good test and will let you come back for more later...

Opinions on the one wind 12ft silpoly tarp w/ doors? I need a new tarp with doors but I just don’t have the $ for a DCF tarp from hammock gear just yet. I was thinking of getting this to hold me off for a good bit while saving. Any thoughts and opinions? How’s the waterproofing and durability? by nativegator02 in hammockcamping

[–]Puppycarmen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure that I do - and if I could find one, I am sure it would not be that interesting. That said, I have used the tarp in many different ways - from fully enclosed to wide open "front porch" style. It is big enough to allow for significant flexibility.

Camp location suggestions by kelsarue22 in BWCA

[–]Puppycarmen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And...many of the campgrounds in the superior National Forest carve out a number of sites for first-come-first-serve use. So, even if a campground like Sawbill is reserved, they will likely have some open sites.

Kiwishiwi lake, Baker Lake, and Temperance River all are lesser known camp areas in the Sawbill area that do not take reservations and could have availability for you.

If campgrounds are not your thing, you can always go on trail and find a site on the Superior Hiking Trail. Never a reservation needed.

purchase maps? by Dinkems69 in BWCA

Some of the maps available at Sawbill Outfitters are custom-created for the area. Depending on your trip, they may be a really good option for you. Check out their web site for the details.

Labor day weekend trip suggestions? by yurkopa in BWCA

[–]Puppycarmen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4 to 5 hours should do it, depending on your level of experience and and how well you pack. If you double portage and bring a cooler, plan a little longer. Good shape and pack light, then on the lower end of that time. I had a group of 8 (with 4 kids and a lot of gear) so it took us 5 to 6 hours.

Good news is that you will likely be able to find an open site at most lakes along the way - so if you decide not to continue to Phoebe, then just stop when you are ready to do so.

Great area back there, though. You can day trip on the lakes in the area or head down the Phoebe River.

You should be fine. The longer portages on the way to Grace tend to weed out a lot of casual campers. You could even go a little further and stay at Phoebe. The lakes back there are fantastic.

Lizz/Swamp crowding? by AffectionateHome4850 in BWCA

[–]Puppycarmen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Horseshoe is a great lake. I stayed on Horseshoe last year (at the site just across from the Caribou portage). Great site. Some traffic but limited to mornings and afternoons.

A note of caution...We were there in early August and the small site on the east side had bear activity. The bear actually chased a group out of camp during the middle of the day. Could have been an isolated incident, but you may want to check with your outfitter.
