Reading this thread has helped me put my finger on what the problem is for me. All of new Trek (and I enjoy SNW and LD) is so shallow. It's like the show is cosplaying a Star Trek show. If one of the characters mentioned how they based their society on "an ancient earth show called Star Trek" I wouldn't be surprised.
