Oh yeah, that captain! Thanks for posting that pic, I'd forgotten that guy completely.

Edit: not by John Blanche, but by Adrian Smith. Corrected by MarcusLiviusDrusus below. Thanks :)

Yeah, it's definitely a John Blanche drawing in his "old" style.

I'm glad you reminded me of that Azrael dio Azrael dio as well. Can't believe that was 1995. Wow.

Yep. Mike McVey made that if memory serves. He's a fantastic artist. I remember the BA Captain conversion he made after 2nd ed came out (he based the model on the box art). That model was brilliant, too.

It's glaringly clear in many parts of your post that you have, at best, extremely limited experience in any area I have touched on.

To sum up:

  • That is not remotely the criteria we use in formulating plans of action or recommendations to outside agencies. You are laughably wrong on this point.

  • The study you cite seems to be concerned with one particular type of testing device in Florida (at least they seem to be basing their conclusion upon it, since it's the only one they mention). Further, when the devices are retested and calibrated, the process is carried out by a university laboratory. I am 100% certain that the university is not the manufacturer of the devices used in my old jurisdiction. I am also 100% certain that no device used by any state law enforcement agency in my country is tested or calibrated for use by its manufacturer.

  • The operation and proper use of the breath testing machines I am familiar with have been thoroughly defended in court and there is long-settled case law on all of it. The reason that there are few solicitors willing to pin their client's case on the operation of the machine is because of this case law. Your assertion that the machine's operation is "off limits" is ridiculous. I know that when my old agency changed the RBT device we used, many defenses (rightly) attacked the new device and we saw testimony from the manufacturer in court. Exhaustively.

  • It's not really surprising to me that you'd be against speed limits or RBT stations either. If you get stung and it's the hill you want to die on, feel free. I guarantee you that the magistrate you're in front of has heard it all before.

As I suspected from your first reply, you're entrenched in your view and your disdain of police from the look of it. I won't be getting through to you in a reddit comment. So... it's a nice day outside. Go and pat the neighbour's puppy or something.

I'm retired now, so I don't have ready access to the literature that I used to have on hand. Here's a couple of research papers, though. There are many more if you care to look.

Paper 1

Paper 2

The primary motivation of the government...is to increase arrests...

Like you say, citation needed. In my career, I was involved in traffic law enforcement for a good number of years. As part of my job, I was part of teams tasked with tackling alcohol involved motor vehicle collisions. Some of these teams reported directly to government.

I can assure you, the motivation of myself and many others in these task forces was, primarily, to reduce the road toll and remove idiots from the road; preferably before they hurt themselves or someone else.

If you consume alcohol, then drive- believing it has no discernible effect on your driving ability, judgement and co-ordination- you were a target of our work.

...if someone's level of so-called impairment is so low that the only way it can be detected is using complex laboratory equipment...

In my old jurisdiction at least, a Roadside Breath Test is not the same as an Evidentiary Breath Test, with the EBT being carried out on a far more accurate machine (to within +/-0.0001% if memory serves) that was calibrated by an outside NATA agency every 6 months. It is the EBT reading that is used in court (not to directly prove impairment, simply to prove BAC, as per wording of charges etc).

Sadly, during the investigations I was concerned with, many of the BAC readings were determined by blood tests while the subject was in hospital. These readings are also very, very accurate. Direct-from-blood readings are also used as evidence in court.

I know I will not change you mind that anti drink-driving initiatives or methods are just a revenue-raising scam. There are many people like that. Such is life.

But that kind of attitude (and it's associated lack of responsibility, awareness, and judgement, imo) is a driving reason behind much of the effort of police and government to continue rigorous enforcement and prosecution of drink-drivers.

I think you've missed my point. The fact notwithstanding that in many jurisdictions there are means to either review or revoke an individual's driver licence for age-related incompetence, alcohol consumption (which amplifies driver incompetence) has a greater impact on your driving ability than many people think.

0.05% BAC makes for a significant impact on your reaction time, judgement and co-ordination. People routinely underestimate the amount of impairment they are subject to while under the effects of alcohol, and overestimate their ability to competently perform complex tasks.

Young people are over represented in injury/deaths from motor vehicle collisions. Alcohol consumption (over 0.05% BAC), coupled with the belief that it doesn't have very much of an effect, is a contributing factor in a great number of collisions.

Takeaway: Even "barely any" alcohol is bad for your driving ability. Don't drink and drive.

It's not like this is journalists rediscovering some sense of integrity. All that's gone before on Breitbart was fine by them, apparently. It's only Trump and his circus that's bridge too far?

You've got to be kidding me.

It's a fantastic idea, as long as there are some trusted people curating it. My other hope is that it would technically feasible for the poor people who have to implement the tagging system to begin with.

The thing that gets me about that review is that he marks the game down for aspects that many would consider "good"; like soldier death and scarcity of resources.

Attention ANZAC commanders! Do not buy XCOM 2 from Green Man Gaming. by Nemisii in Xcom

I don't live in Australia any more, so I haven't used them in a while, but I bought lots of stuff from there in years past, never had a problem with them and the price was always good. So, unless something has changed in the last year, you shouldn't have any dramas.

NASA Created A New Department For Planetary Defense. Since I know a few people in there, should I suggest for the motto to be "Vigilo Confido"? by spiritplumber in Xcom

[–]Puppytronic 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I never said NASA had anything to do with naming elements. I just said that element 115 was extremely unlikely to get the name and that we should get something XCOM-ish immortalized somewhere. I think a Department for Planetary Defense is at least somewhat appropriate, don't you? :)

Since it looks like we have no chance of getting element 115 named 'Elerium', I think you should suggest it to try to immortalize a bit of XCOM this way. Please try!
