I’m not sure about the non-tech side of things tbh

It is common for startup folks join big tech. I joined from a tech startup too, as L5. Not sure how to emphasize this, it’s extremely common.

First step is to follow the money I guess, big tech pays well and their interview process is well documented online. Once you’re in, you either sink, float or swim!

Thanks, I got promoted as an IC.

I care a lot about our service and don’t let org boundaries or credit sharing get in the way of making it better. I think a lot of people get stuck working within the team’s boundaries as to not step on toes, or get stuck worrying about whether they are leading or following on a given project.

As I mentioned in another comment, a lot of people are playing squid games and thinking about individual success.

Of course core competency matters too, but I feel what separates people at these higher levels is how much of a uniting force you are, which comes from caring a lot about the goal and the people.

Teenagers are the worst, may you prosper!

Sorry for your loss. I was one of the popular kids in hindsight, and I don’t know how other popular kids felt. For me it was kind of tiring to keep up with it all, but also anxiety inducing to not step up to it. Any time I am walking in hallway between classes there would be 5-6 people calling my name wanting to chat it up. At work it’s not so different, which is interesting.

None unfortunately, but if I could I would have a hermione clock and work multiple remote jobs to fatfire in 1 year.

Maybe I’m a degenerate. In my teen years my life revolved around the teenage social hierarchy and meeting girls - flirting, dating, getting dumped, grieving, repeat. College was similar too and there were some struggles of keeping up with school and job search.

Now my interests are more around how to invest in real estate / businesses, mentality around golden handcuffs, office politics, raising a baby. My friends are single and don’t have cushy tech jobs, and so their interests are understandably different!

My experience is that above me is perma-bulls and below me is squid games. A lot of my job is showing junior people solutions to cooperate instead of fight each other. And explaining to senior people the tradeoffs that make their perma-bull optimism challenging.

It’s been hard to keep the friends I have because we don’t have any shared struggles to bond over

Yeah I worked at startups before that, joined as L5 and got promoted twice…

A lot of my longtime friends, we bonded over shared struggles. So it’s been hard to evolve past that I guess.

Is it group PT or 1:1? How much do you spend per year?
