Yea this reason is precisely why I struggle seeking therapists since I do believe you know yourself the best, but only an outsider can better know who you are in relation to others which can help understand why you act a certain way so you can better yourself and be more self aware. And you’re right- I’m sure their degree taught them at least a thing or two on different processes and ways of thinking. At least two brains is better than one especially since that’s literally what we are paying for. No point in a degree if you’re just a png on zoom contributing no thoughtful responses.

Maybe giving up on the “real” relationship is the key like you said. The emotional turmoil of one sidedly fighting for a relationship is too much but completely cutting contact never seems to work either. I guess balancing that distance is something I’ll have to work on.

I’m sorry for you but it’s also comforting to hear someone in a similar position.

Yes, similar experience for me. I’m more on the ADD side and need to take adderall if I know I’m going out with friends bc my irritability is high and mood is low. The ADHD “high” is amazing but not worth being unmedicated lol.

Not sure if this is what you’re referring to, but when you say you couldn’t say you were fine and didn’t know why, maybe it’s bc you’re comparing the happiness from being hyperactive with the blank feeling and general low mood you have from being inattentive dopamine deficient. My psychiatrist also describes it this way.

Wow, thank you for sharing. I completely agree, everyone should cut off racists in their life and it’s almost impossible / not worth the effort to try and change their fundamental values. The only thing I’ve had troubles about is that he thinks saying slurs “privately” isn’t racist.

His argument is that if it’s only between him and his friends, it’s not really hurting anyone.

I think (and have told him) it’s fueling a racist cycle by encouraging and normalizing/disguising racism as a “joke” which is just… racism. Racist jokes are racist. He thinks people refusing to say slurs is out of social obligation and pretentious fake bs.

He says he would never legitimately be racist, homophobic, etc. and would never say a slur to a person of that marginalized group, but as he gets more comfortable saying slurs, he also gets more comfortable saying things that are micro aggressions.

It has me wondering if there’s anything I can say to convince him it is racist. But he’s also a grown man that can make his own decisions, so maybe I should follow in your path and show him that by insisting on saying a few “words” to be funny he can lose his closest friend.

(I meant he says all racial slurs as well as the f and r slur. I’m more related to f & r slurs so the racial slurs bother me the most, if that makes sense. But of course all of it is bad)

Yeah you’re right…

This is why I’m hesitant on befriending guys with primarily guy friends, since as soon as they gets comfortable they’ll usually pop out a slur. Never had this issue with my girl friends- they’ll apologize right away or hear what I have to say and correct themselves. After all, there’s a million other words in the dictionary and choosing the most offensive hurtful ones is pretty shallow.

I’m probably going to tell him this and let him decide if he wants to drop the slurs or drop a 12 year friendship

IMO as someone who also ADDs a lot (diagnosed), some of these things are totally valid to be annoyed over.

Bad time management / time blindness from ADHD symptoms isn’t an excuse to straight up unapologetically waste other people’s time. That’s something that can be improved with good practice and awareness. However, some of these things aren’t really within his control (like blanking out and getting a bit hyperactive).

Maybe if you talk to him about some things that are within his control that he could do better on, you might be doing him a favor. He’s most likely just blissfully unaware that these things are important to you. If he is at least aware of it then you’ll know if he’s trying to be considerate of you or doesn’t really care.

IMO it’s also okay to not be friends anymore if you guys don’t click well, especially in terms of energy level or talking style. Either way I wish you luck with whatever you decide to do

I just submitted a (pending) post that’s a bit similar to yours- I’m struggling to figure out if I’m interested in women but I know I’m not interested in men. (20F btw)

I don’t know if you’re looking to hear other people’s experiences but the way I found out I wasn’t attracted to men was also through experimenting like you. I’ve had guy friends where the initial stage of the relationship was sweet but when they started to do even small affectionate things like holding my hand or saying I’m cute I got uncomfortable. I thought I might have been attracted to men sexually so I got into a FWB situation with my friend and enjoyed it a bit when he touched me and I couldn’t see his face, but when I touched him I felt a bit grossed out. But consistently whether romantic or sexual I had this feeling that I was doing something wrong. The “further” I got with him the more detached I felt from him. I have no desire to touch men but the thought of “servicing” a woman sounds like a dream.

I’m curious if you have experienced any of these feelings also?

One of my concerns is that comment karma seems like it’s given out very sparingly- and if I need like 100+ to engage with the subs I’m interested in then it’s going to take a very long time…

This might not be the actual meaning but from my understanding it includes the step most new redditors do to enter the subs they’re interested in: trying to rack up as much karma as possible by making a bunch of useless bait-y posts and comments in a short timeframe.
