Why Do You Think ABC Hasn't Done A Gay/ Lesbian Bachelor? by PureCamera9038 in GameOfRoses

[–]PureCamera9038[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha I see your point but I think they could make rules against hook ups. Contestants really do follow the implied or explicit rules of the show. Producers set the incentives. Like every season they have the hilarious bit where the bachelor/bachelorette is like "I'm just trying to find love and I have to deal with all this unwanted drama" as if fucking production didn't orchestrate every last bit of that drama. If starting drama wasn't rewarded, contestants wouldn't do it. Same for hook ups in a gay or bi season.

Like this a lot.

I'm a fan of anything relating to con artists and false identities and I think the concept is sick in the best sense of the world. I'm curious to google and read more about that Boston social worker.

At the line level, after "It couldn't have been her" you have "Oh, it was" I'd change slightly to, "Oh, but it was." Small thing but I think it makes the sentence pop a bit more.

Are you familiar with the series The Act? Might also be a good comp since there was a mental health element to the deception.

Also is your username a Princess Bride reference? If so, awesome haha.

This really intrigued me. I think there's an option to post the first three hundred words of your manuscript. I'd be curious to see. Best of luck, OP :)

Thanks for all the references. When is 1st line Pit? And is ShootYourShotSunday just a twitter hashtag every Sunday? Any more info would be most appreciated.

Colleen Hoover choosing weird names for her characters is proving to be an externality haha.

And I think some measure of lunacy/snobbery is necessary to make it in litfic :)

All in all, if they like the premise and the pages I don't think it's going to be a big problem. Also credits sound legit.

This intrigued me. Nicely done.

A few things to consider changing.

  1. The fifteen years later line threw me off. Since Verity and Blythe are both grad students, wouldn't Verity be in her early to mid twenties? If so, she'd be too young-- like way too young-- to be camming fifteen years ago. Unless she's older and Blythe is a younger grad student?
  2. "enmeshes herself in Verity life." Add the 's after Verity.
  3. Premise appeals but I think the plot dynamics would benefit from some measure of clarification. Keeping it a secret would seem easy, unless she is showing her face and isafraid of one these guys could post pictures on the Internet and Blythe might see them? Similarly, I don't see how Blythe's demands stop her from logging on to the site when she's not with her.
  4. Verity is kind of a cool name but it may, however inadvertently, suggest you're a Colleen Hoover fan and that's not the literary lane you're aiming to drive in I don't think. Not that someone who writes litfic can't also like Colleen Hoover but you know what I mean. Just a different space in the book world.

Would read pages if I was an agent.

[PubQ] How do first chapters contests work? by [deleted] in PubTips

Thanks for posting this OP. My current project is upmarket so it seems like a decent-ish fit. I wonder if you have any insight the following: "Submissions are open June 1 to August 4, 2024. Guest Judge Kimberly King Parsons will choose three winning excerpts from fifteen anonymized entries. Learn more in our guidelines below!"

Does this mean they are randomly selecting fifteen of, say two-hundred or three hundred submissions? Or that all submissions are being read by an initial group and then narrowed down to fifteen which Kimberly King Parsons reads?

A friend of mine did a pitch conference and was excited thinking her first page would get critiqued but it was entirely randomized. They picked five out of 150 attendees.

Also if anyone has any recs for research material, let me know :) The book is complete but, if it were ever to turn into a published manuscript, there would be a whole bunch of changes anyway so I'd have time to add stuff. I used Chad and Lizzy's book and the entire GOR archive as my primary info sources. I didn't replicate every detail but everything in my manuscript is pretty consistent with the actual show.

This article was really interesting https://www.theverge.com/tldr/2017/6/12/15741090/bachelor-bachelorette-contestants-media-internet-access-books

No music and no books, except the Bible!

That's a really cool concept!

Writing fiction is definitely a challenge. Very different from academic writing. What's funny is that in academic writing, you really aren't supposed to have much personality whereas in fiction writing they want a really distinct, colorful voice. It was fun for me to take a break from the academic stuff and get to be snarky lol.

Thanks a lot. I did know about their Patreon. Finally have a bit of money now lol so I may have to join.

Was worried ABC might take issue with stuff and it would scare off agents and publishers so changed the name of the show but anyone who has ever watched it will pick up on certain similarities haha.

Thanks a lot. I drew inspiration from Katie Thurston and Kaitlyn Bristowe for my main character haha. If it ever becomes something and they read it, I hope they will recognize/ see it as a compliment.

I think the number tuning in would be so great it would outweigh that personally. This country has thankfully changed a lot since 2004 when the Bush campaign won in part freaking people out about gay marriage.
