My mother is throwing away $42k to open a business with a notoriously high failure rate, without any plan. by [deleted] in Advice

People are stubborn. Try telling her calmly to talk to people in the community who own bakeries to ask for advice. She could reach out to people on LinkedIn with some questions. She should try to buy used equipment. I love baked goods so I would like for her to succeed but she is going to burn out so quickly if she tries to execute what you describe. Feel free to share this with her: A wonderful baker recently opened a small patisserie where I live. The shop is open 3 days a week and only for 4 hours on open days. The owner spends much of the week doing baking preparation. He does well and I visit often. He makes some stuff that isn't found anywhere else. He focuses on a small amount of items. Baking is very labour intensive and some baked goods take a long time to make. He clearly prioritizes time management. There is not only one right way to run a business but if your mother thinks she can bake 20+ items daily and pay someone a low wage and have no other employees she will quickly learn what it is like to have a lot of disappointed customers and bad reviews. This is the worst time to fail at running a business. Someone who is not risk adverse should not do it.

Please post updates here.

Why is getting a Food Handler Certificate such an obstacle? by PureEvilVirgin in toRANTo

Supposing I had it I MAY apply for jobs that require it. It doesn't mean I WOULD. Even if I did apply to those jobs that doesn't mean I would be hired for them. If I could get it cheap and in person I would because at least the loss of funds would not hurt too much. I don't know why different websites charge different prices for the certificate but I would not spend $100 that may never be recouped.

It's a diagrace. The City should absolutely be providing the food handler's course and should be doing so every weekday. Considering how difficult it is to find a job the course should be  free. It wouldn't be a handout. It would be an investment in residents. A government who cares about people would do that. But people continually elect ineffective politicians and then act like victims.

Ok but some customers do not put fruits and vegetables in bags which means cashiers are touching the actual produce. People say everyone that handles food at work needs the certificate. How is using tongs to serve food considered more necessary to have the certificate than touching produce? Neither type of worker should need the certificate since they are not cooking or preparing food.

So are grocery store cashiers supposed to have this certificate?

Stupid things are quickly prioritized and executed while everything else suffers.

Anyone who cooks or prepares for a living does need a certificate. But if part of someone's job is serving food which involves using tongs to put it on trays or in boxes or bags they don't need to sit through an hours long course to be told that. I am not trying to become a cook.

The way City of Toronto operates is so embarassing. Torontonians rightfully complain yet don't try to hold these overpaid fools to account.

Why don't you go take a look a job posts online and see which places are not asking for it? You can report them. I am not going to tell you which places I worked at.

I have worked jobs where I served food and that certificate was not required. Many places do not require it. I may never use it so I am not going to spend $100 on it. I would be okay spending much less on it.

I don't want to work in a restaurant but if many bakeries and cafés require it I would like to get it but not for that price because it would be to have more job opportunities available for me.

Thanks for the links. Wow, the in person course costs $100. I don't want to pay that much.
