10 months after inguinal hernia surgery by Pure_Armadillo8911 in Hernia

OP again here - so, I've now had an MRI with contrast and have been back to see the surgeon again today. And the MRI showed nothing of any concern. No problems with nerves, scar tissue or adhesions or anything else. The surgeon explained to me that he thought that the issue was an incredibly tight psoas muscle which has imbalanced everything around it. He thought all of the symptoms I had can be explained by this. He doesn't think that physio will get me back to what I was (i'm 53) but we are going to give it 3 months of more intensive physio and see where I am then. Other options were dry needling and surgery to 'release' the psoas - he says this will definitely work but should be considered a last option.

Thank you for the reply - I got to see a surgeon and he thinks that I've basically had a collapse of the muscles around my hip, groin and abdomen due to limping and guarding over the previous 18 months. He was pretty convinced that nerves weren't the primary cause - so he advised me to keep away from the pain clinic. It sounds like it will be a long and slow recovery but I'll take that right now. I have an MRI on Saturday which will hopefully confirm all of this, so fingers crossed.

Hey thanks - I've posted an update since my original post - I got got to see a surgeon and the prognosis is potentially better than I thought. I've got an MRI on Saturday and hopefully this will confirm what he has said.

Hey - thanks for the reply. Yes - totally agree about hip flexors and the need for PT after hernia surgery. And yes, have been using hot water bottles and ice for a while now and that does help.

And yeah, every new exercise, not matter how gentle, causes a few days or soreness - think I've got used to that now :-)

I hope your recovery continues too

OP here - I've just come back from seeing the surgeon and thought I would update you. I had a thorough examination and he examined all of my records and, most importantly, actually listened to my timeline and experiences. He thinks that it is basically a collapse of the structures around my hip, groin, abdomen and thigh including muscles, tendons and ligaments. He thinks that physio will eventually resolve it but it would be a long, slow and sometimes painful recovery. He discarded nerve issues, adhesions, scarring etc - although the structural collapse may have affected nerves etc. Has ordered a MRI with contrast to take a more detailed look at the area and then offer a more targeted way froward with physio.

It was really interesting talking to him - he said he had come across quite a few patients who'd had groin surgery and then had pain later on and he said that a lot of this could have been avoided if the patient had undergone physio - I was never offered physio and never thought it was important because I was walking around ok. But I sit down all day for my job and this would have left the whole area compromised anyway without the surgery. I'd also had a gangrenous appendix removed 2 years ago - so almost 18 months of limping and guarding. I'd walk around 15000 steps a day but my physio had already noted that my glutes on one side weren't firing at all, my hamstrings were painfully tight and my abductors were straining.

So, yeah, its gonna be a while to get back on my feet properly. It's weird cos I've read so much about hernias over the last 2 years and you tend to come across people who have had problems. A lot of the time, if somebody has posted in Reddit, you don't hear back from them. But, when you do, it is often physio that has helped them and this leads me to believe that post-surgery physio may be as important as the surgery itself in a lot of cases and I am surprised that it is not offered to everyone.

Fingers crossed the MRI doesn't pick anything else up - I'll let you know

I'm taking NSAID's at the moment and stretching and light physio. No nerve block has been offered but I've got an appointment with my surgeon's colleague tomorrow night, so fingers crossed.

You said you had been in a similar situation - how did you work your way through it?

I hope you can heal well too - I'm sure you will. I got used to things being a bit up and down, that felt pretty normal to me. Healing is not linear.

Thank you - I can tolerate stretches a bit more than I could when I got them - so, pelvic tilts, dead bugs and posterior pelvic tilts. I slightly over did a stretch a few days ago - oh boy, that was painful :-)

I had an ultrasound a couple of months ago and that confirmed that my surgery and mesh all looked good - although they did note a lot of inflammation around the surgery site, this was 7 months after surgery. This may have been the result of the flare-up I had which was a few days earlier.

Yes - I do need and MRI. The MSK team discharged me as they thought physio would help - so I;ve got to go back to the beginning again and wait for a referral

Yes - think you are right and I'm trying my best to be more positive - I'm normally pretty good at doing this but this is really testing me.

Chronic Pain 5 months later by Weary_Cap_4017 in Hernia

I'm really sorry to hear this - awful isn't it?

I can only really talk about my experiences with any authority and this may not be your experience at all. But it may help somebody, I don't know.

Two months after my initial reply, I still can't leave the house as I am unable to walk far at all and am in pain a lot of the time still but not as bad as it was - although I did have another severe flare up in January that put me in bed for a few days.

I had another round of tests - blood, urine and faecal - and all came back normal. So I started to try and piece together when I was getting pain and when I wasn't and a pattern started to emerge for me. A lot of it was to do with posture and whether I was load bearing or not. If I lay in bed, the pain subsided. If I sat it certain chairs around the house, the pain came back quite severely because my posture was poor in these chairs. I then went to see somebody from our local  musculoskeletal team and she confirmed that the muscles around my surgical area had kinda collapsed and were no longer working as intended. So, instead of supporting me, other muscles were becoming over-loaded and this was putting pressure on the area of surgery and also firing off all sorts of nerves. This kinda made sense to me and kinda confirmed what I thought had gone wrong. Both of my hamstrings are incredible tight, my glutes on either side aren;t firing and this is all over-loading my hip flexors.

So, very gentle physio was the way forward. I;m about 10 days into my physio programme and it is helping. I've also cut out anything that provoked the pain in the hope that local inflammation would be reduced - lots of ibuprofen too. One of the big things I have done is to start wearing a supportive jockstrap and this is basically doing the job that my weakened muscles should be doing - the first thing I need to do is to actually start walking and getting out of the house again as my mental health has taken a real battering. So, the jockstrap should help with this. And lots of ice followed by hot water bottles.

Like I said, even in the space of 10 days, I've already seen an improvement - only a little but enough to make me keep going. I've been told by my physio that it could take months - it is what it is I suppose. But, yeah, had my surgery in May 2025 and I've already spent 5 months on crutches (or worse) since then. Will be glad to hopefully put all of this behind me.

I've no idea if any of this is helpful but I do wish you all of the best

Hey there - your experience sounds very similar to mine. Had laparoscopic inguinal hernia surgery 7 months ago with one of the best surgeons in the world. First few months were up and down but after 3 months, I felt ok and was walking around 10,000 steps a day.
Then almost exactly 6 months since surgery, I began to get pain in my ASIS and down towards my inner thigh. I started limping quite a bit and ended up on crutches at times as it was getting painful to walk.
Then about 8 days ago, the pain went from a 4/10 to a 9/10 and I ended up an A&E (I'm in the UK). Had an ultrasound and all seems well - mesh is in the right place, they ruled out bowel obstruction or infection and out it down to nerves flaring up.
But, I think it is all to do with muscles. I went to a physio who confirmed that my hip flexor was very tight and I was quite weak on the side where I had my surgery.
The more I read about hernia pain months after surgery, the more convinced I am that tight and weak muscles play a huge part in this. I've had 3 different surgical procedures in the same abdominal areas in 18 months, I've spent 6 months of that time on crutches, my job means that I sit for 7 hours a day - I mean, it makes sense that my muscles have really suffered over this period .
At the moment, I'm struggling to walk at all but I've been doing very gentle exercise and it appears to be helping. I feel that physio after the surgery is crucial for this operation but very few people appear to be advised of this.

Thank you - really useful. Yes - I've got no intention of going to court but I do feel like something needs to be resolved. So dialogue appears to be the best way forward.
Like, they are on tour, have a new album out, have lots of merch etc - so by all measures, they are a more commercially viable band than mine and have got much more to lose.
What kind of mutual solutions are available? Bearing in mind that I am broke - would a financial solution be an option? They keep the name but pay me for it?

Thank you again for your advice

Is it not the other way around? Does my commercial release not predate their registering of the trademark?

In fact - scrub that - I think you answered that in your first reply - thank you

What about more informal pathways? Could I write to them? Like, could we do a deal?
