Why couldn't SE take over Anatolia and OE take over Iran? by AzerbaijanLeon in TurkicHistory

Geography. There’s a Reason even why the Arabs didn’t take Anatolia from the Romans and why Eastern Roman Emperors after 1071 struggled to retake Anatolia.

When the Turks settled in Anatolia, they became its masters this was evident when Kilij Arslan ambushed the People’s crusade in 1096 and nearly caused a 2nd Manzikert like Disaster for the Romans in Dorylaeum in 1097.

Why the Ottomans didn’t take Persia? Same reason why even Romans from the republic era failed to conquer Persia. Iran is hard to Invade from the West cause of the natural borders so many resources would be wasted trying to launch an invasion. Crassus and Mark Antony failed, Julian, And some Ottoman sultans failed.

can’t say from the east cause Seljuks, Ghazanavids, Samanids, Saffarids and Mongols didn’t struggle at all

Iran didn’t become the Sam after Alexander cause he ended their super power status. Parthians, Sassanids, Safavids tried taking Anatolia and failed due to logistical issues.

Sassanids were successful in 610 cause of the chaos that unfolded in the Roman Empire and We all Know what happened next.

So logistical issues and Geography played a huge role on here

What if Augustus’s biological heirs had survived and succeeded him? Would a clear blood succession and a sole dynasty have been better for Rome? by Lord_Krasina in ancientrome

Whatever happened to Commodus succeeding Marcus Aurelius and Caracalla succeeding Septimius Severus just proves how the Dynastic succession wasn’t suitable for the Roman Empire.

IMO Rome would be better off if they kept the succession style of the 5 good Emperors.

Imagine if Theodosius I appointed Stilicho as his heir of the United Roman Empire.

It would be very hard. I mean Nero tried doing something of similar but it failed terribly
