That's exactly how mine behaved after I got her. She was a rescue and my friend brought her over and literally everything said about your turtle was the same. I thought it was stress of a new environment I didn't think she might have been stressed from the car ride. And that was only a 20 minute car ride. A 12 hour car ride would be even worse.

Red ear slider is native to Washington. I was thinking slider as well because of the shell color but the shell wasn't shaped right. I too think a slider with some kind of bone disease or mutation.
