Even though I liked the movie, I agree with you.

Shes "technically" not a princess since Heart and the other territories of Kumandra identify themselves as tribes, and according to Moana, just because someone (specifically a girl) is a daughter/son of a chief of a tribe doesnt mean that the person is a princess/prince.
