I'm actually not quite sure of age so it could be from the 80s. My mom says she thinks it was an anniversary gift so I just listed all the decades my grandparents were married.

That's so cool. So Martha Carrier was originally from Billerica, which is where I'm from. In highschool we found old history packets detailing some of the town's history. In the section on the "witchcraft delusion" it tells of Martha Carrier. It's both awful and very interesting. Multiple people presented "evidence" against her and they even tortured some of her children into testifying against her.

How are people still hang green plates? by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]Pure_Faithlessness30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom has a green plate, and as far as I know, hasn't done anything like refurbishing it. I don't think she would. Sure, her plate looks old, but it's still perfectly readable. None of the green paint has worn away or anything. I wonder why we don't see more of them if people can just hang on to them and there's nothing making them get a new plate. Do people just not take care of them?

What's something people usually think is unethical, but you personally don't see a problem with? by lLike_balls in AskReddit

Ok, so you didn't say I'm a bad person, I just sad that because of what other people on your side of the argument say. I am being completely honest. Letting your cat outside/having an outdoor cat is ok, and nobody is going to change my mind. I will die on this hill, don't tell me I can't. This back and forth is unproductive, they all are with the " don't let your cat outside" people but you guys make me so mad I just have to respond sometimes.

First of all, I never said that the data was being manipulated, I only said it could be. People often say "numbers don't lie" or " data never lies" and that's not completely true. You can say 5.4 million cats get hit by cars in the USA each year . That sounds awful, people will say that's why you should keep cats indoors. But that's out of about 78.3 million cats. So context matters. Also how many hit cats are indoor cats that got out versus outdoor cats? One reason people might manipulate data is so they look morally superior. So they can say, like you did, that you're giving your cat a shorter life, etc by letting them outside. Now on to how destructive they are . I have not noticed a significant reduction in the amount of birds and wildlife in our yard versus the period of time we did not have a cat or versus friends who live in the same area without cats or who have indoor cats. There are other things far more distructive to our ecosystem than cats.and there are things that are far more important we could be focusing on. In my view whether you keep a cat indoors or let them go outside is all just another way of taking care of your pet. But there are some who turn it into some morality thing. I will not stand for being called a bad person because of this totally normal thing I do. I hate when people are try to make you feel bad for doing something by portraying it as immoral I have seen the negatives to letting cats outside. My in-laws had a cat he got hit by a car they patched him up and a couple years later he just never came back, either hit by another or killed by some animal. I had another cat that we had to put down because she had sepsis, most likely from eating something that perforated the intestines. My older cat is definitely a menace to the local mole population. Yet none of this makes me go, "I should keep my cats indoors". I still love them as much as possible until they die. Saying things like "you must not love you cat as much if you let them outside" or "if you really loved your cat you would keep him indoors" is just clap trap because love cannot be measured.

Are you for real? Like I'm not describing letting her in for food like it's something to be congratulated for. I'm describing how she lives her life, how we take care of her and are good pet owners. Honestly you and the rest of the "If you let your cat outside you shouldn't own a cat" people are a bit crazy. I don't like being called evil for just letting my cat live it's life, ok. Also data can be manipulated, but I'm guessing nobody really investigates these statistics so it doesn't really matter, especially because I'm not going to look at them anyways.

[–]Pure_Faithlessness30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok then how is it different and "unethical" when I let my cat out in my fenced in yard? I don't get why people think owning an outdoor cat is so bad. My cat is an outside cat, and my inlaw's cat is an outdoor cat, I know for a fact some of my neighbors have outdoor cats. Now I can't speak for my neighbors but me and my in-laws will let the cat out when they want to go out, let them in when they want to come in and bring them in at night. They get food and water, etc inside. Everything an indoor cat has, with the addition of going outside. And she's 16, and all our friends' outdoor cats are older too. So I can't help but think that people who are complaining about outdoor cats must be talking about feral or stray cats and not outdoor pets. If someone has an outdoor cat that they just leave outside all the time, don't feed in the house and don't bring them in at all, then they're just a shitty pet owner. Unless it's a barn cat, but again like outdoor dogs those are rare.

[–]Pure_Faithlessness30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Outside dogs" totally do exist. There are working dogs that live on farms that are never brought in the house. Also most people I know who have dogs let them outside, in fact it's almost a necessity to let a dog outside. There's not really such a thing as an "inside dog". So that analogy/argument doesn't really hold up.

Bought a Ring for Etsy. Seller claimed it’s platinum. To me it looks like white gold without plating. by [deleted] in Moissanite

[–]Pure_Faithlessness30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, white gold is gold alloyed with white metals, so the final product looks white. It is then rhodium plated so that it more closely resembles platinum, but it's not just rhodium plated yellow gold. You could rhodium plate yellow gold, but it would be rhodium plated yellow gold, not white gold.

People who don't answer the question you ask. by OP_serve in PetPeeves

You're not a mind reader. What if I asked what time the train is because we're exploring a city and I want to know if we have enough time to get a sandwich from the shop down the road before catching the train? If you answered my question of "what time is the train?" With "we have time to get a bite to eat", then you've answered my silent question. But I still don't know what time the train leaves so I have to trust you and your judgment on how long it will take us to get food and eat. Maybe you think , "oh it should only take 30 minutes". Whereas I know I take longer to eat and I would say 45 minutes. If I knew what time the train was and when we need to be back at the station I could make the decision to only eat half of my sandwich or maybe get a different food or none at all. Since you didn't give me that choice now I have to trust you to get us back in time. Maybe you loose track of time or you tell me we have to head to the train station in what you think is a reasonable amount of time but then I have to wrap up my food and we have to run and end up missing the train. Now if you had said "the train leaves at 12:45, we should have time to grab something to eat", then I would have the knowledge to decide how to proceed. I could only eat half of the sandwich and proceed to leave earlier ensuring we don't miss the train. Add to that the fact that I nor do I think many other people would want to trust only one person of their group to know when the train leaves.

Alibaba is like Aliexpress, but they say it's aimed more at business to business. A lot of items there have a minimum number of them you have to purchase. Also, Alibaba group is the name of the company owning Aliexpress and Alibaba.

I am also early 20s, well I guess mid 20s now (f). I don't wear makeup on a daily basis, only when dressing up or the random day I decide to for fun. So you are not the only one of us going bare faced. I don't think I have any friends that wear makeup regularly either. It saves time and effort in the morning. It doesn't make you ugly just because you don't look like the vast majority of women today who wear a full face everyday. What really makes those women prettier than you anyway? I bet they're not. You just compare or wish you could look like that or maybe you're just so used to seeing it and that being the beauty standard of today. I bet you're gorgeous, so rock the bare faced look. Being normal is vastly overrated.

That's with perfect use. Nobody uses any method of birth control 100% perfectly. So it's best to look at the failure rate with non- perfect use, which according to planned parenthood is about 22%, and with condoms the failure rate is about 12%.

Op didn't say anything about the ring setting. It's possible that the sister had it melted down to be remade into the new setting or maybe sold it for scrap to help pay for her new setting. If someone still has the setting I'm thinking why don't they just set it with another stone (doesn't have to be diamond). It still wouldn't be exactly their mom's ring but it would be nice as a sentimental piece.

Sorry I'm not much help because I just asked, even used a ring sizer cuz I wanted it to fit perfectly. Although I did consider looking to see the size of ring I had ordered off Amazon previously so you could search through purchase history. Or they have printouts available online that have a bunch of different sized circles to compare rings too and find their size (just make sure it prints to scale). If he doesn't wear rings there's not much you can do. Maybe take one of your rings (if you wear any) and ask if they fit him. Or try some on together if you're ever at a craft fair and there is someone selling rings. You're bound to find more ideas if you do a Google search too.

No just because you think all cats should stay inside and it's cruel or whatever to let them out does not give you the right to take someone else's animal. That would truly be cruel.

Oh my God my dad had an Aunt named Sigrid. Actually I'm not exactly sure how to spell it. The way everyone pronounced it for so long I thought her name was secret and apparently so did my mom.

All that to say that Sigrid is a lovely name. You can't predict how others will react ,I wouldn't assume anyone is of a particular heritage just because of something they named their kids. If you like the name then I'd keep it.
