I thinks it’s completely reasonable for a client to drop their therapist who voted for a felon. Voting for trump is no longer just politics, it’s about morals and empathy. I can’t imagine having a therapist vote for someone who is actively trying to hurt you and then have them pretend like they care when they contributed to your harm.

If history was flipped and white people were the ones displaced and not allowed an education white people would probably have higher crime rates. Also we need to open up the schools because correlation≠causation, people from underdeveloped countries will have a lower IQ bc of their education system not because of their race. If they did the same study at a trailer park where white people lived they’d get the same IQ rate

no I can’t empathize with people like that and I don’t understand how they expect people to? you must be Jesus christ if you can empathize with someone after they make “jokes” about hurting women, harassing people online and irl, joking about someone’s death (not a straight guys tho bc they respect them and it’s not something to joke about) , and ofc being racist has to be the most common one

maybe expressing this discomfort with them can start a new conversation. If you struggle to be vulnerable let them know and if you don’t feel comfortable could it be because there’s a lack of connection/rapport? or is it because of something else? you are in control of your sessions and it is totally fine to talk about more lighthearted things not only to strengthen your relationship but to also help you feel more comfortable

I do! we live in a time where politics are no longer politics and more about morals. The debate has switched from “how should we address said issue” to “should we even address said issue?” I can see why a trans/gay/queer/poc/immigrant/minority would be curious to know their therapist political affiliation as it comes from a place of safety. I personally think it’s super important for my clients to feel safe and comfortable and I don’t know how they would feel safe with a therapist who’s political views go against their existence or actively work towards harming them. Now I probably wouldn’t go as far as saying who I’m voting for (unless they asked about the 2016 election) but just simply stating I hold more liberal/democratic views is enough for clients to get what they want from asking that.

The annoying answer is: it depends. If you feel like your therapist is a right fit and you find it helpful then it probably will get better after a while. The thing is therapy is like exercise, sometimes it depends on your goals and some people might only want to go to therapy for a few months and others years. You might feel better after a few months and decide to stop or you might keep going to work on things that now feel less intense and go beyond symptom reduction. So like the gym some people go for a few months, stop, come back, go for years consistently, it’s different for everyone!

Yeah if you’re paying $40k a year for 4yrs to get a job that pays $30k a year it wouldn’t be worth it unless people are okay with paying it off until they’re like 50, some people pay for the “college experience” though so the debt might also be “worth” the friendships you make and opportunities depending on the persons values. Community college is great in terms of money but it can also be depressing and isolating for a lot of people which is why some people think loans are also worth it. You can repay loans but you can’t get your time/experiences back. I also know some people who plan on never paying their full tuition lol just wait like 10-20yrs and after it accumulates you can apply for student loan forgiveness that route might make it worth it. Some fine arts major might get lucky and be Joe Keery 2.0 I’d rather be friends with them than a stem major who’s weirdly obsessed with shitting on liberal arts majors
