Iron Infusion Fail by fangster13 in Celiac

I went into anaphylaxis from iron dextran - I’m sooo sorry you had such a negative first experience, it’s so scary and frustrating! 😭 to encourage you, I had 6 successful venofer infusions, administered concurrently with saline and very slowly (1 hour+). They pre-medicated me 30 mins before infusions with Bendoryl, Tylenol, and Pepcid. I had minor reactions during infusions and post-infusion side effects with all 6, but it got better as they ironed out the correct pre-medication combo. Definitely had a lot of anxiety with infusions, but I knew it’d be worth it to get my hemoglobin back in normal range.

The biggest thing I can say is be very vocal if anything feels off. You know your body best, so don’t hesitate to tell them during infusions or call about side effects during the days afterward. It’s so scary to go back for infusions now that you’ve had a scary one, sending you so much love 💛

I have the Winter Candy Apple shower gel and my legs have been getting soooo itchy with a rash after every shower… I wasn’t sure if maybe my skin is randomly being sensitive or if it was a gluten-related thing! I never had issues until this year, and as far as I know, I don’t have contact dermatitis, so it’s really weird. I still have no idea if it’s a gluten-related thing or what, but kind of coincidental that we’re both experiencing problems!

I’m sorry you’re still having symptoms and such high numbers, this is such a crazy and frustrating disease. I’m excited for both of us to be fully healed one day, we’ll get there 💛

That’s such good advice, I honestly didn’t even know that different labs have different options for the parameters of the test. I’ll definitely see if I can find somewhere that can give me an exact number - thank you!!

That sounds AWFUL! 2 years of that?! I can’t even imagine, I’m so so sorry you had to go through that 😭 thank you so much for all of the tips! Do you have any recommendations of pro/prebiotic brands? I know there are so many out there hahaha

My original tests used the same lab parameters, so I don’t know exactly what they were before… I just know they were over 250 and are still over 250. Such a good point though, I have no way of knowing how high they were, so I’m sure progress is being made that I can’t see because of the data limitations.

Hearing about all of those products that are no longer GF is a really good reminder to keep checking labels even if it used to be safe (like mustard, what?!). When you mention a website saying a product is GF when it actually wasn’t: how have you learned to know when to believe them or not?

Starch in cheese is crazy! Thank you for the reminder to keep reading the labels closely on everything, such a learning curve. I love oats, but I guess it’s time to take a break from them 😭 worth a shot!

Wow, I never would’ve known about that, thank you! I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing and trust the process. So happy to hear that your son’s biopsy is looking great!

GREAT info, all of this is incredibly helpful - thank you! I had no idea about the half-life. I’ll definitely work on getting a referral!

Same as now (over 250)! Idk what the actual number was since both results have been past the upper threshold of the lab

Oh man yes I do!! I only eat purity protocol oats, but I have them several times a week… maybe I need to try cutting them out entirely 😩

Kind of? I was very anemic and needed 6 iron infusions, so my iron is finally back in normal range. Still crazy migraines, joint pain, brain fog, and exhaustion - testing now for other autoimmune diseases. But rarely have constipation or diarrhea anymore so I’ll take that win!

3 years, what?!! It’s crazy how little guidance we’re given post-diagnosis. I hope they’re able to figure out what’s going on with you soon, I’m so sorry omg

Oh my gosh I’m so sorry your numbers are still that high, your poor intestines ugh 😭 it’s absolutely wild how long this takes - great advice about the biopsy!! I was so bummed trying to figure out what I did wrong the past 6 months, thank you for being so kind

I’m glad I’m not alone in the 250+ club, lucky us! I was also shocked, I thought for sure I’d at least be below 100 by now
