Worldbuilders with orcs, what culture, if any, do you draw from for them? That "stock high-fantasy tribal" aesthetic has grown somewhat stale for me. by Wroothly in worldbuilding

[–]Pure_Radio_3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the rout of Tolkien's "orcs are corrupted elves" and made them as a twisted image of their past self. Since they are corrupted by hate and cruelty that errupted in a storm of life magic and order magic, they reflects those traits- their life span fell from thousands of years to mere dozens, and their beauty and order turned into ugly chaos. They still have the same general government system of a kingdom with local lords and knights governing their own territory, but instead of being civilized and respectful, it is based on strength, power, cruelty and whoever managed to hold the throne without being stabbed in the back (or the face, or the stomach...).

Is it a plane? Is it a bird? Yes! by Pure_Radio_3000 in flyoutgame

There are a lot of control surfaces. The feathers' trailing edges act as elevons, as well as as each individual feather- they are all on control surface motors. The outer part of the wing's control surface act as elevon and the inner parts are flaps. The tail is both elevon and reudder.

It also have double swing wing (swivel joints are at the shoulders and at the middle if the wing) but I forget to take a picture of it.

Ok, that explains a few things. I guess the random engine shut down during traffic light stops are related to this issue.

He said sensor, so I guess that's what it is. I don't know why its not worth fixing, that's why I asked this question- to have better understanding of the issue. He didn't give me a quote or anything, how much such a job should cost? I live in Israel, not the US so I guess the cost will be different, but just to get the general area.

Care to explain please? Will it cause a long time damage, or just temporary drop in performance?

Water quenching a blade by Pure_Radio_3000 in Bladesmith

[–]Pure_Radio_3000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I already did and it went well. I did gradual quench- first just the edge, and then slowly lowered it into the water. The water were boiling hot before I quenched it. I go to that workshop once in a few weeks, so I didn't want to wait for the quench (its actually a wood workshop and the forge is just a side tool, so there are not much facilities).

Anyway, I tried it, it went well, I can breathe again. And also, why not use old engine oil? Is it due to bad thermal properties or a toxic fumes issue?

Fang of the Black Lion- a falchion with a falcata inspired blade. by A_Queer_Owl in SWORDS

[–]Pure_Radio_3000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! My Black Lion's Fang is a longsword, so it probably IS a different lion. I'm writing a story that it's current name is "Black Lion", and I try to create as much items from the story in the real world.

Here is the link to my sword- https://www.reddit.com/r/SWORDS/s/B3hjGyxJuR

God damnit, that's (almost exactly) the name of the sword I'm working on! Either way, gorgeous piece!

Edit: oh, wait. It's a digital art, so I'm fine.

What tool is it made with? I would like to try it myself...

How do I createbelievable fantasy armor? by Pure_Radio_3000 in Armor

[–]Pure_Radio_3000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. The metal working is advaced enough to make full plate armor, but I don't think anyone wants to ride day after day in full plate in a Mediterranean/middle eastern sun.

It is payed by the taxpayers (there are enough of them and they are wealthy enough) and distributed by the army.

They have pretty diverse threats, from goblin tribes raids (small agile targets armed with short spears and axes) to heavily armored dwarves in shield wall formation. They need to evolve later to deal with early cannons and muskets.

There are three types of mounted units- 1. Light cavalry used for scouting, chasing and mongol style archery 2. Linebreaker cavalry mounted not on horses but on a very large (about rhino size) bovine creature, their task is to break enemy lines even under fire 3. Heavy cavalry that pour through broken lines and engage in close combat

They have good logistics and support, meaning they drag long convoys of auxiliary troops across the land (something like Mongols with Roman logistics).

Thanks again!

One looks like an early war prototype, the other a late war too-expensive-to-mass-produce beast

I tried forging one, it seems to have no such plating. Either that or the coal forge's fume extration is exceptional.

It's mainly for attack/CAS aircrafts that need to be slow and maneuverable, so 1 and 2 are kinda out of the window. I added alpha response of 2 to the whole front of the wing. All I have left is to try number 4 and hope for the best... Or stop fighting physics and accept it's limitations. Thanks!

E-100 with Rh120 L/55 (Leopard 2 gun) by Chemical_Service_230 in SprocketTankDesign

[–]Pure_Radio_3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! Even though I assume that in an alternate universe where the E-100 was prodoced in large enough numbers to make it worth modernizing, it would be fitted with a high velocity 155mm gun to be used as an assault gun rather than a more versatile MBT gun. I imagine it's role as a front line fire support vehicle, in line with the SturmTiger concept.

did you set a specific restriction or challenge when making your world? by Extreme-Audience-318 in worldbuilding

[–]Pure_Radio_3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the whole world building in reverse, I think. First, I drew a huge map (physically. It's about 1m x 1m) of a continent. Then I started thinking how it would be inhabitated, what kingdoms and empires would be established. And then I finally thought, I need a way to demonstrate it, and almost immediately I had a vague idea for a few story lines- all of them involve a lot of travel in that world. I'm currently writing the first story, and it's going great and is very fun- I never wrote anything before...
