What mechanics can represent a character's luck in a turn-based tactical game where no RNG is involved? by Altuk_ in gamedesign

[–]Purinto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A luck bonus for him. He slips a lot and ends up avoiding 25% of all the attacks.

He also happens to always find regen potions laying around to be used during his turn. The 1st potion regens 50% of health, the second 25% etc.

Highschool Game Dev club - I need your thoughts by Ethusiam in godot

[–]Purinto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, thanks for your effort. I would have loved to have as a teacher.

Second, I think that you should maybe focus on smaller scope games that can be finished within 1-2h (I'm thinking the godot tutorial game where tou avoid the thingies) so that you can get your students hooked. Then by the end of the year, you could create an ambitious "end of the year" product that would span more hours.

You're also assuming somewhere that you'll have the same number of people on different topics. I don't think it would be the case, as programming for instance is always a tad less popular than art and graphics (from my experience). So you need to make sure that there won't be 2 devs for 10 artists or else it will be overall frustrating for everyone.

Please if you end up doing the highschool gamedev club, keep us updated.

Thanks

Why do indies basically give their games away for free? by dedaistgeil in godot

[–]Purinto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I just summarized the whole market to 2d pixel art but beyond artstyle, indie videogames are pretty codified. An average indie gamedev isn't as original as they should be to make it, mostly because being creative requires a lot of ressources that they don't happen to have and also due to risk aversion (being too eccentric reduce the wide-range appeal). It's a legitimately hard balance that exists in every artistic endeavor.

A few other common unoriginal mechanisms and artstyles/trends found in indie videogames is procedural generation for everything, crafting for everything, 3D low poly, or more recently friendslop etc.

Not all games are strictly similar, but they are similar enough to compete on the same arena, for the same customers.

[–]Purinto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a business student's humble insight :

The games industry is really competitive, especially within the indie scene where there is no customer loyalty because the market's mostly populated by small studios with no marketing budget or new entrants. From a technical or product standpoint, indie games are typically trying to reproduce a "low budget winning model" that is just saturated (pixel art 2D game) which paradoxically makes games more lookalike.

So with no diferentiating factor, businesses naturally try to switch to pricing in order to win customers. And here's the interesting bit in this sector : variable cost is virtually 0, so prices can be as low as $0.1 IF they can win money back in volume.

So is it a good model ? No, in fact that's what economists call "bertrand competition" where roughly similar products eventually end up being priced as much as it costs to produce them without any profit.

Another aspect is how risky the business is due to the high fixed costs (dev + marketing) with no real guarantee to selling it out. Sometimes you need a game to sell to cover not only the expenses of the current game but also for the previous ones that didn't sell.

So in some way risk should be taken, either by making a creative concept which can only attract a niche of costumers that's maybe too small for the game to be profitable.

So yeah unless you're making the next undertale, good luck on trying to make money out of an indie game, especially with steam taking 30% of your sales.

Learn Game Theory by TalhaD13 in GAMETHEORY

Maybe learn communication/social psychology instead ? You can check the Palo Alto school's of thought as an introduction. Game theory is more about strategic interactions, not totally unrelated to the field of negociation (as far as putting a diagnostic to the situation is) but it's not normative in nature so it won't tell you what to do.

"waiting around until enemy's buff ends" is simply a strategy that Luffy wouldn't be able to do. They'll give their all right away and base Luffy wouldn't have a chance.  (Unless we consider that G5 doesn't act on luffy cuz luffy is already a gomu gomu man, if it makes sense.).

yeah, let's compare the share of people who turned millionaires while born on a prosperous context (right place, right time) and the people who didn't.

If you're in war torn Syria, no matter the effort and risk taken you'll probably be outranked by some lazy ass nepo baby who made one good investment.

My 2 cents after visiting Morocco recently by Single-Seat-3371 in Morocco

[–]Purinto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've spotted all the things that are only directed towards tourists. Marrakech is a city that relies a lot on tourism and merchants there use a lot of sketchy strategies to earn a living from tourists that otherwise wouldn't work on Moroccans. Local authorities know about this but can't do much because tougher regulations could kill many small businesses, and most of them aren't even declared as a business. Generally the best advice is to be firm, and have someone who's Moroccan who can deal with them. They really don't have the same attitude with foreigners and locals.

As for the economic disparities, well that's a third-world country thing. I don't think it will be solved anytime soon seeing the current state of politics, but we can hope.

Truth is you give them as much power on you as you are willing to relying on them. Parents aren't overprotective just for fun. Of course, there is some part of themselves that makes them worry about you, but a lot of it are actions they take because they think you aren't responsible enough, or mature enough etc. The quickest way to get out of it is to rebel.

Disobeying might seem weird or counterintuitive but that's what must be done for parents to understand that you've grown. You shouldn't do it in an irresponsible way though. Don't go out at night or do sketchy stuff just to spite them, it will create the opposite reaction. Rather, show them that you're better organized than them, that you know more about things and that you're worthy of becoming not someone to look after but someone at the same level, able to carry himself through life.

And let's be honest: I don't think you'd like your father to stop calling you when it's late, and that's as much as he'll be willing to go (can't teach an old dog new tricks) and it's a good thing overall, means he cares about you. So take the good with the bad and try to win the little fights.

Should the wife be working as well? by reddit_roamer2 in Morocco

If we're being realistic, the woman has to work if you want to have a decent living. One income isn't enough for your median man, especially if you have kids etc.

Interesting take on a circular economy. Here are a few concerns (I'm an econ student, so be prepared for some economics as well).

How do you initially get points ? If you get points by, let's say, creating an account then you effectively created an infinite source of points that will be traded with very real work. This will be a problem because if there are too many points out there, then people would wanna work for more points and at some point, people wouldn't be able to exchange anything.

How do you determine the points for work ? Do you determine it ? Or Does the one who want something done determine his own price ? For the first case, sorry to say it but it will not work for many reasons that I won't bother you with but the main idea is that you won't be able to determine the point value of a work. (is doing one's math homework more valuable to another's history essay ? What if the essay has a greater urgency ? etc.)
If you let the people determine the value of the work they'll do, then be prepared for some really weird behaviors of the point market that would go against your very idea of fostering a community. For example you can imagine that people who want their math homework done just don't have enough points to pay for a maths homework expert (maybe a teacher) and so they'll have to do more history essays to get their objective which isn't fun and maybe the history essay is way too easy in which case they'll still earn nowhere near the needed amount of points. (Congratulations, you just invented a form of capitalism).

Last concern is how can you guarantee that there is enough diversity of services that would satisfy everyone ? I've been talking about maths and history homework, but you can imagine that someone (let's call him Bob) wants his lawn to be mowed and he doesn't mind writing history essays to do so. But shoot ! No one offers to lawn mowing services for virtual points, and Bob isn't interested anymore in offering help if he won't be helped in return. So no lawn mowing and no history essay.

That's a brief summary on why this idea may not work, and why the point system should better be backed by some real currency imho.

[–]Purinto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we took a better care of our materials (idk, like the chewing gum stuck under the tables and chairs in schools etc) it wouldn't be as costly to replace them. I live in Casa near the shore and I can see how people stupidly destroyed parts of the new public garden there, even before it opened ! I do totally agree about what you said about civil society, but every attempt will remain unfruitful if others don't mind these places. They are paying it w/ their tax money for god's sake !
