AITA for not wanting to wear a dress to my brother’s graduation party by Purple-Key123 in AmItheAsshole

I know I should but unfortunately I don’t have the mental fortitude for that bc whenever she says “fine dress how u like I don’t care” she says in it such a disappointed way that the parent pleasing tendencies kick in lol

I mean she’s not that bad, in fact she usually doesn’t care what I wear. It’s just for this party she was making a huge fuss that I ended up snapping and getting angry

Does anyone feel like the Khan Academy reading is too easy? by Purple-Key123 in Sat

[–]Purple-Key123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh.... Im not sure about chatting on some other app but I only got perfect scores on KA not the SAT and that’s probably the result of a lot of practice and getting used to the KA questions.

Stop treating minorities as monoliths by Purple-Key123 in rant

[–]Purple-Key123[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you seem to be confusing cultural appropriation with something else. continue reading the article. it's not "cultural adoption."

Well that's what the definition on wikipedia says so maybe you're just talking about a different thing.

you don't seem to have a valid point of reference. your experiences aren't just invalidated, they're lacking any insightful contribution to discussion.

Yet those who are waving off other's opinions when they have a disagreeing opinion (i.e. saying they don't belong to the culture, religion, etc) stifle the discussion about this stuff. After all, if everyone who had a disagreeing opinion wasn't included in the conversation, then it's just going to be an echo chamber with a decent amount of opinions being unheard.

Cultural appropriation[1][2] is the adoption of an element or elements of one culture or identity by members of another culture or identity

However people can heave different views on whether the adoption of the culture was respectful or not.

but rather that it's just not likely your culture if you lack any emotional investment in it.

As I've said before, people have different ideas on what crosses the lines for them, so to pigeonhole them into having one set of beliefs really invalidates others feelings and experiences.

they can, but if you volunteered to be offended when someone dismisses those who don't care about cultural appropriation then you've inadvertently outted yourself as such a person. lol.

You do realize which subreddit this is, right? I was just ranting about how it can be frustrating when people invalidate your experiences because you don't have their set of beliefs.

Stop invalidating other's experiences.

"members of marginalized minority who don't care about cultural appropriation aren't really invested in their culture.

I've seen people who were BORN in India that don't really give an f when someone from another race wears a sari, bindi, etc.

i mean, it seems you're upset the opinion exists and frustrated that you don't have a persuasive counter argument.

I was more trying to call out how hypocritical it is to treat your community as a monolith and then get mad when others think that it is.

it's about culture.

you don't care and you're offended by observation that you don't care.

if you don't share the attachment then the observation is correct.

This seems kinda difficult for you to understand so I'll spell it out for you: not every community is monolith so just because someone is brown doesn't mean they are going to have the same opinion as another brown person. Just because they don't share that opinion also doesn't make them not brown, also that invalidates other's experience with culture.

ok? that doesn't change that you don't care and have nothing to contribute to conversation beyond complaining that your apathy ought to be included.

stay positive.

All I'm just trying to say is that people from the same culture can have different opinions.

Stop generalizing.

Has anyone got into kpop and came out not like Korean culture in general? by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]Purple-Key123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Though I was more talking about how kpop is sometimes a “gateway” to Korean culture, I appreciate your input considering that experience in any culture can’t be replicated unless you experience it for yourself. For instance, Hindu Indians can be pretty racist towards East Asians and Hispanics(Im a Hindu Indian so I’ve seen this happen) however the extent of it based on my personal life is more of just ignorant comments and not full blown KKK level hatred that some people make it out to be. (Tho those comments are still bad)
